Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sarah Maury Swan
Lulu's birthday is coming up and she is looking forward to having a big party, but first comes her younger brother's birthday party. How is a girl supposed to live through that? Her parents are spending way too much time preparing for Billy's party and no time on hers. Plus he keeps getting birthday cards in the mail, but not one comes for her. Lulu will not help blow up the balloons and on the day of Billy's party, she will not even participate. To top it off, her brother gets a wonderful ball. It is more than Lulu can stand, so she hides the ball. Billy and his friends go to the park with Mom, but he has to play with his kite because he cannot find his ball, which makes him cry. Lulu stays home with Dad and discovers her yo-yo is missing. When her father sympathizes and reminds her that Billy's ball is missing, she understands how her brother must feel. So she takes the ball to the park and wins a hug from Mom. She is proud of Billy for winning the game they play with his ball. And now her birthday is next. Nicely done message about sharing and the illustrations are colorful and cute. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
Kirkus Reviews
Lulu's little brother Billy is about to have a birthday. She wants to know when her birthday is; Mum tells her it's soon, just not as soon as Billy's. Lulu isn't listening; she's already making birthday lists. When Billy's cards start arriving, Lulu wonders where hers are. That weekend, she hears Mum planning a party. Lulu's party? No, it's Billy's, so Lulu won't help with the decorating. Billy's friends arrivebearing gifts, and Lulu's predictably jealous. She hides Billy's best present, a big purple ball. Billy wants to take it to the park later and is sad he can't find it. Moments later, Lulu can't find her favorite yo-yo, and suddenly she realizeshow Billy must feel. She and Dad takethe ball to the park for a happy end. Britain-based duo Hollyer and Damon have created adecentbit of bibliotherapy, though careful observers will see some sequencing inconsistencies--or at least mysteries--in the watercolor illustrations. Nevertheless, the realistic and sympathetic treatment of Lulu's emotions will strike a chord with preschoolers. (Picture book. 3-6)
