Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Krosoczka's cafeteria heroine is back—and this time she's serving up justice in the summer camp mess hall. When Lunch Lady and her faithful sidekick/gadget expert Betty become the newest employees at a sleepaway camp, they expect to enjoy a relaxing summer full of cookouts, s'mores, and bug juice. But when a hideous radioactive swamp monster invades the camp and begins terrorizing the kids, Lunch Lady must spring into action and find the creep posing as the creature. Could it be Scott, the lifeguard? Ray Magee, the disgruntled assistant camp director? Or is it possible that there really is something otherworldly lurking in the camp's pond? Somewhat reminiscent of old "Scooby Doo" cartoons, Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown spotlights a goofy plot full of Krosoczka's usual cafeteria-themed superhero gear. Younger kids with an appreciation for silliness will love it. Reviewer: Michael Jung

Gr 2–5—Fun and funny. Brave Lunch Lady; her reliable sidekick, Betty; and those inquisitive kids Hector, Dee, and Terrence move the mystery and adventure to the road as they take on the slimy swamp monster that's been terrifying Camp Fun Times. There are plenty of suspects as the kids get to know their counselors, but Lunch Lady and Betty are ready for anything with new gadgets like an Underwater Bendy-Straw Breathing Apparatus and an Underwater Mixer-Propulsion Backpack. The two-color art is loopy and energetic, with varied, easy-to-follow page layouts. Jokes and puns are sprinkled throughout to keep the energy high until the exciting finale.—Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MD

    Adorable

My daughter loves this book. Her Grandma is a lunch lady, so she gets to think about her Grandma being a super hero. This is a book that got her to read on her summer vacation. She keeps re-reading it. I am ordering the others in the series for her birthday.

Great for reluctant readers and anyone with a sense of humor

My son loves stories, but he had a hard time getting good enough at reading to read books at his interest level. A librarian suggested this series and my son ate it up. These books helped him enjoy reading. Now when he reads I have a hard time getting him to stop and do other things, like eating. =) Graphic novels (the name given to long comic books) were a great boost for my son. Heck, these books were so fun I read them after my son finished them.
