Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This title opens with a dramatic story of a child experiencing her grandmother's development of lung cancer, presumably from smoking. There is a succinct and clear definition of cancer, the functions of the lungs, and cancer in the lungs, including an interesting sidebar on the lymphatic system. Two types of lung cancer are described, omitting the fact that lung cancer may also be secondary to other primary sites of cancer, and thus different in type. Significant emphasis is placed on the danger of smoking as a cause. Diagnosing, treating and coping with lung cancer are briefly covered, along with one version of the FDA list of stages of cancer. Sidebars on the symptoms of lung cancer and alternative therapies offer useful and cautionary information. A chapter on the history of cancer is interesting. Colorful pictures, computer images, and useful sidebars are included on each page spread. While information is clearly presented in text, understanding it is complicated by the density of the text and the readability of font type throughout the book. The book contains a glossary of words that are in bold in the text, an index, and "Find Out More" resource lists of organizations, books and websites. This is a useful resource book children needing specific information on lung cancer and for school reports. The author is an educator for special needs children. Other titles in the "Health Alert" series include Alzheimer's Disease, Depression, Heart Disease, Asthma and Juvenile Diabetes. 2005, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, Ages 9 to 12.
