Overview

Lung cancer is the most common cancer affecting the industrialized world and affects the lives of thousands of people, including patients' friends and family, every year. The most common cause of lung cancer is long-term exposure to tobacco smoke. The occurrence of lung cancer in non-smokers, who account for as many as 15% of cases, is often attributed to a combination of genetic factors, radon gas, asbestos, and air pollution, including secondhand smoke.

The aim of this book is to give, in a clear and simple way, succinct information about all aspects of this type of cancer, with a stress on the practical side of its treatment. The book also details how care is likely to be organized and what patients can do to help themselves, both if they have the disease and also how to stop smoking.

Fully updated for this third edition, the book includes information on getting the best treatment and living with cancer, both of which are new approaches to the disease in the UK.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Celeste Taylor-Ryman, BSN, CPON (University of New Mexico Hospital)
Description: This succinct presentation of the diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment of lung cancer can be a reference for patients with lung cancer or their family members. It is one in a series of books from the U.K. that discuss a medical diagnosis in a short, factual manner. The first edition was published in 1984.
Purpose: The aim is to give quite detailed information, in a clear and simple way, about all aspects of lung cancer, with an emphasis on the practical side of its treatment.
Audience: The book is a good source of teaching material for patients with lung cancer and their families, nursing students, medical students, and anyone who has an interest in the disease.
Features: In a concise, organized way, the book presents the pathophysiology, epidemiology, side effects, and treatments of lung cancer. Graphs and pictures, as well as their explanations, are easy to understand. The chapter on dealing with lung cancer provides good information on getting the best treatment and lists resources in the U.K.
Assessment: This is a great resource for someone who is newly diagnosed with lung cancer and a great help for the practitioner who can use it as a teaching aid.
