"Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on lupus, the co-author of the leading textbook, and an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, published in 1995, was the first book written by a leading authority specifically for patients. It immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease. Now Dr. Wallace has completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This revised and expanded edition discusses the newest breakthroughs in drug treatments as well as the most recent discoveries in cellular, genetic, and immunological research—all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. Readers will discover 10 new blood tests your doctor can do, over 30 new drugs introduced since 1995, an extensive table of herbs that can be used for the disorder, and a large section on cognitive therapy and biofeedback. There are new sections on topics such as cell signaling, lupus susceptibility genes, selective cox-2 inhibitors, newer immunosuppressive therapies, and osteoporosis. And as in the first edition, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix listing lupus resource materials. Over a million Americans have lupus and some tens of thousands of patients die every year from the disease. The new edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that willhelp them manage the disease and live a happier life."

Library Journal
In this updated fifth edition, Wallace (medicine, David Geffen Sch. of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles; The New Sjogren's Syndrome Hand-book) discusses new drugs to treat lupus as well as recently discovered information about the pathology of the disease. Wallace's goal is to increase awareness and so encourage earlier diagnoses, since lupus is difficult to diagnose, and patients may have the condition for years before it is identified. The book begins with an overview and a brief history of lupus as well as its possible causes. Wallace also provides a background on inflammation and immunity as they relate to the disease. Several chapters outline the many different ways lupus can affect the body. The book includes tables and figures throughout plus a glossary of terms and a list of resources at the end. VERDICT Though the target audience is general, this book's reliance on technical jargon demands a lot from readers. Patients and their family members who seek more detail than most consumer-level books and online patient information will find this a beneficial resource.—Dana Ladd, Community Health Education Ctr., Virginia Community Univ Libs., Richmond

Continuing with his quest for physical and emotional health, Deepak Chopra (Ageless Body, Timeless Mind) zeroes in on common intestinal disorders in Perfect Digestion: The Key to Balanced Living, due in October from Harmony. Digestion plays a central role in our lives, says Chopra, turning to Ayurveda, the traditional Indian science of health, for greater understanding of the mind-body connection. Explaining how the gastrointestinal tract works when it's healthy, he offers suggestions for restoring it to health when ideal functioning is lost through imbalance or disease. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternate selections. ($15 128p ISBN 0-517-79975-8) An autoimmune disorder that often defies diagnosis and to date has defied a cure is closely considered in Dr. Daniel J. Wallace's The Lupus Book, an October title from Oxford University Press. Describing the mechanism of the disease and putting therapies into perspective, Wallace, an L.A.-based specialist in lupus, blends clinical information with practical advice. ($25 256p ISBN 0-19-508443-8) In The Race Is Run One Step at a Time: Every Woman's Guide to Taking Charge of Breast Cancer, a September title from the Summit Group, Nancy Brinker addresses the reader in personal terms. Having lost her sister to breast cancer and waged her own successful battle with the disease, she describes the devastating course of her sister's disease and discusses the importance of early detection, care and preventative measures. This revision is updated from a 1990 edition to incorporate information about the latest technologies and statistics. ($13.95 paper, 224p ISBN 1-56530-182-X)

Description: This is the third edition of Dr. Wallace's comprehensive guide to systemic lupus erythematosis written for patients and their families. In addition to discussions of the disease, it includes a glossary, an appendix of resources for patients and families, and chart of herbs that are used in the treatment of SLE.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to expand upon the often brief and inadequate explanation of their disease, prognosis, and treatment options offered by physicians to their lupus patients. In an era of ever shorter visits between physicians and patients, there is tremendous need for more detailed discussions and this book is equal to the challenge.
Audience: Dr. Wallace is a prolific author and recognized authority among rheumatologists and writes eloquently for the educated and motivated patient.
Features: The book offers broad discussions about all aspects of the disease from pathophysiology to clinical manifestations to treatment. The glossary, herb chart, and appendix of resource materials will be especially well received by patients.
Assessment: Rapid advances in the field and the ability of patients to stay abreast of innovations via the Internet require a book like this to be updated regularly, and so a third edition will be eagerly received. It will be at the top of my list of recommendations for newly diagnosed patients.

"As we accelerate the scope and pace of lupus research, it is vital that we inform the lupus community of advances and changes in the field. This is one THE best books I have ever read about Lupus. As a Lupus sufferer, it is important to know aspects of this illnesses. This book goes from the diagnostic phaze to the definition of and the treatment of Lupus. It is very detailed and concise in its approach. Doctor Wallace must be one heck of a rheumatologist because he took very complex subject matter and made it coherent for the average American. This book is filled with information on various treatments for Lupus, a prolifera of testing procedures and an explanation of co exsisting autoimmune diseases. Any individual with Lupus, their families, physicians and social workers should have this truly well constructed text!

This book is very informative but the drawings and list are incomplete in the electronic version. I paid for the complete book and only got part. The book is very precise in covering Lupus and explains it well. I suffer from the illness and have studied many books, and believe this to be the best by far. Two stars lost for quality control, previously mentioned.

Hello. This is to those who've decided to join the pack of Haladis. ~Be warn like any other rp there will be rules. Just know that from here onout we are family and once you decide to join you ware this &delta on your arm. Its our symbol for family. Here are the guidelines that you need to follow. 1.) Never kill or harm another pack memeber. No matter the problem never harm another member. If so, it will result to consequences. 2.) Never speak out of line, expecally if its the alpha. Always hear the person out before talking back. 3.) We dont allow rebels. If your are a new do not become agrivating and annoying towards other pack memebers. And most importantly if you're a rebel and you become a ruckus to deal leave. 4.) If there is a tresspasser always report to the Alphas Eren Lunaya and Fenris Faust. they will take it from there. If they want to join bring them to us still. 5.) Always help a memeber in need. Even a human has a choice. We are protectors, gaurdians. 6.) Make sure you have fun bonding with other pack memebers. Social bonds are what bring the pack closer and more of a family.: So from here that should explain everything but, we also need two packs. Haladis pack carry &Delta symbol and the Eros carry &omega sysmbol. The alphas (Eren Lunay and Fenris Faust) carry &Omega symbol. Just remeber have fun and be safe we hope to see you soon. ~Sincerly, Eren lunaya & Fenris Faust.
