I found this title in the bargain books section; I love hardcover cookbooks for durability, so I had to try it. The book starts with a very comprehensive history and explanation of the different types of berries and how to choose the best of each type. The recipes look delicious, although some may be a bit adventurous for anyone new to baking. There is a wide variety of desserts encompassed in the book from traditional pies and tarts to a great selection of creatively flavored cakes, custards, cobblers and an especially elegant looking raspberry souffle. You may need to purchase cooking equipment to prepare the recipes as written (I don't own ramekins, custard cups or a food processor) but creative cooks know how to make due and the recipes are flexible as to the type of berries used if you want to substitute different types of fresh berries that are in season. I did rate this book a bit low because I felt that the format doesn't seem to flow very well, most of the recipes feel broken because you have to turn the page, either because the list the ingredients and method starts on the right-hand page or because there is a full page photo inserted between ingredients and the method causing you to flip back and forth to refer to the amounts when reading the steps. Overall I'm happy with this purchase, the recipes look great and I can't wait to try them the all!
Who could resist this beautiful cookbook? It has everything you want: beautiful pictures, clear and easy to follow directions, and of course, delicious receipts. If you have ever picked a bucket of berries, you would be proud to use them in any of these wonderful desserts. I really loved the Easiest Berry Terrine on page 115. It is a wonderful berry filled gelatin made with cranberry-raspberry juice. So simple and so delicious!
