Overview

The fortress city of Montfort has been liberated and restored to its true name, Caer MacDonald, but for how long? Luthien Bedwyr and his comrades - the irrepressible "highwayhalfling" Oliver deBurrows, the beautiful rebel Katerin O'Hale, the fearless half-elf Siobhan, and the dwarf leader Shuglin - have no time to celebrate. The humans, elves, and dwarfs of their peasant revolution have captured a city. Their nemesis, the demonic Wizard-King Greensparrow, has conquered most of the world. To quell the "minor riot" Greensparrow sends the smallest division of his Praetorian Guard. The eleven thousand killer cyclopian warriors vastly outnumber the defenders of Caer MacDonald. Against such impossible odds, Luthien's only advantage lies in Eriador's harsh winter; his only chance lies in rousing the fierce tribes of Eriador's wild countryside to his cause; and his only hope lies in finding the mysterious mage who once helped Luthien recover the legendary sword and cape of the Crimson Shadow.

In The Sword of Bedwyr, Luthien Bedwyr became the warrior-thief known as the Crimson Shadow to fight the Duke of Montfort. Now, the Crimson Shadow must rouse the peasants and fierce tribes of Eriador to fight tremendous odds and the demonic Wizard-King Greensparrow's bloodthirsty warriors to save their beloved city of Caer MacDonald.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The battle to free Eriador from the grip of the tyrannical Wizard-King Greensparrow continues in this fitfully rousing sequel to The Sword of Bedwyr. Although the humans, elves and dwarves led by young Luthien Bedwyr, The Crimson Shadow, have retaken the city of Montfort from Greensparrow and have restored the city's ancient name of Caer MacDonald, the battle for freedom has just begun. An army of "cyclopians" led by the vicious Belsen Krieg advances to crush the rebels, who must gain allies from those reluctant to take on dangerous forces. The ancient wizard Brind D'Amou, who sparked recent events with his gift of a magical cape to Luthien, joins the rebels as an adviser and leader. Luthien himself, abetted by followers and comrades, devises brilliant tactics that destroy his immediate enemies and earn him much-needed allies. Salvatore's battle scenes are robust, but his fantasy is dully derivative, and Luthien's meandering about his love life is awful. (Feb.)

Meet the Author

R.A. Salvatore
R.A. Salvatore
R. A. Salvatore was born in Massachusetts in 1959. His first published novel was The Crystal Shard. He has since published more than a dozen novels, including the New York Times bestsellers The Halfling's Gem, Sojourn, The Legacy, and Starless Night. He makes his home in Massachusetts with his wife, Diane, and their three children.

Good To Know

Well, I just turned 50, but I'm still a clean-up hitter on the softball field. A couple of years ago, I found myself in horrible shape and feeling lousy all the time, and so, with the help of my wonderful and beautiful wife of 25 years, I started taking my health seriously again. Now I feel better than I did when I was 40. Fit Camp three times a week and yoga and softball and all the rest.

The other thing that I've come to learn about myself is that R. A. Salvatore and Bobby Salvatore are two different people (and I much prefer Bobby, thank you very much). It's not that I lie to readers at book signings, or anything like that, it's just that the things that are important to me are the little things in life: my family, my home. Writing is what I do, but it's not who I am. I remember one time about 20 years ago, I went back to where I had worked to see my brother, who still worked there. Gary was a few years older, and was, of course, my hero. An associate found us in the parking lot and nudged my brother, asking him what it felt like to have a younger brother who was so much more successful than he.

Gary, of course, took it all in stride, turning what might have been an awkward moment into a joke. Gary died a few years later and I'll never forget the lines of mourners -- grown men crying like babies. He was such a big part of the community, as a friend and a coach to so many kids over the years.

That brought me back to the parking lot and the awkward moment, and the truth of it all: I was not and have never been more successful than my brother, and nothing I can do as a writer will get me there. Only the things I do as a human being, a father, a neighbor, a friend, can bring me into his league.

    FANTASTIC!!!!

Luthien and Oliver continue to be the best duo since peanut butter and jelly. Oliver's wit and Luthien's bravery and army commanding guts make this book a fabulous addition to a wonderful trilogy.
