In this visually engaging book, British fashion historian Cox enlightens readers about heritage brands, including Louis Vuitton and Fendi. Cox (Stiletto), head of cultural studies at the London College of Fashion, deftly weaves fashion anecdotes with significant historical moments in sections divided chronologically into the pre-19th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Who knew, for example, that Lincoln wore a Brooks Brothers greatcoat when he was assassinated, or that President Obama is the 39th of 44 presidents to wear Brook Brothers. In captivating profiles of luxury labels, Cox covers well-known brands from Hermès to Dior, Cartier to Coach, lesser-known icons like Lock & Co. (the oldest hatshop in the world, based in London) and lingerie line Aubade, as well as everyman brands such as Chippewa and L.L. Bean. Filled with black-and-white and color photos of fashion artifacts and archives, this collection chronicles fashion history while paying deep homage to companies dedicated to the pursuit of perfection, whether it be in the form of a bowler hat, bespoke suit, cowboy boot, or evening gown.
