Overview

Opening with an intro and going right into a talky interlude, you just know Lyfe 268-192 is a heavy-with-message, ambitious album that's going to flirt with ponderous disaster. Quit worrying, because what Lyfe Jennings has to say is worth hearing, well presented for the most part, and you only have to excuse some overeagerness. The biggest problem with this smooth, thinking singer's debut is that there's no prologue or "hey, how ya doing?" Instead, Jennings vividly pours out his troubles with little background, assuming you're down. A couple listens later and you'll get him, but few debuts are this wandering and deep from the get-go. What makes it worth it is Jennings' honest, poignant, and warm writing, empowering at times and occasionally heartbreaking. "Made Up My Mind," "She's Got Kids," and "Must Be Nice" all display the kind of Gil Scott-Heron realism meets D'Angelo smokiness and Bilal soul-searching that had Jennings take the amateur title five times at the Apollo, but "Greedy" is the album's centerpiece. It's only one side of what is a most definitely a complicated story, but "Greedy"'s tale of being chased by the cops for child support is a chilling can of worms few artists could open so confidently. The metaphor-free track is a stark portrayal of "this crazy, lazy lady" who is using a baby for revenge, and when Jennings sings about his friends dismissing him as a worrywart, it captures with crystal clarity the isolation that so many experience when confronting a crisis. A couple tracks refuse to get to the point and too much narration gives sections of the album the repeat listening appeal of an audio book. It could have been tighter and more approachable, but few debuts hold this much promise.

Everybody talks about seeing him on Apollo, I didn't see him. I got this cd because of his video "Stick Up Kid" that plays on BET sometimes. This cd tells a lot stories that he has experienced and you can experience it with throughout the cd. Lyfe and Anthony Hamilton are shutting the male R&B artists down right. Both have that same gritty sound that makes the you feel all of their emotions. I can't even pick what my favorite songs are because I love them all. I've had the cd for 2 weeks and haven't been able to stop listening to it since I got. Please get this cd and support him.

First, must state that the cd is one of the best I have heard this year. You can put the cd in your car or home and enjoy every song from beginning to end. The mood is relaxed and the atmosphere is full of energy when he bounce from one song to the other. This is a "must buy" for the collection.

So much in fact that I bought 4 CD's. One strictly for the car, one for the office, one for my man locked down in Ohio (what up O.D.), and the fourth to replace the second one that got scratched..probably from playing it so much. What an incredible talent and performer. I saw Lyfe live at the House of Blues. I was blown away by his performance. 268-192 is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

This new artist is da' bomb!!! I am excited about him and would love to see his career go further. It's one of those CD's in which it can play all the way through and not just certain cuts'. You all need to cop this disc fo' real. Cry and My Life happens to be my favorites.

I love the grittiness in this man's voice--it's strong but vulnerable at the same time. It was refreshing to hear an R&B cd that didn't go into LaLa Land the whole time--he talked about the good, the bad, and even brought up some socially conscious problems (i.e. child support, golddiggers, outside fatherhood, etc.) I am crazy about the song "The Way I Feel About You." My head bobs uncontrollably and my hips start swaying without my permission as soon as I hear the opening beat--that is the BEST song on this whole album. "She Got Kids" was such a dope song to me because I have a constant dilemma when dating men with children, mainly because I don't want children and as I get older, it's harder to find men without them. Lyfe talked about all the not-so-nice thoughts that go into someone's mind when the other party does not have child(ren). "Greedy" and "Made up my Mind" are those songs that are NOT sympathetic, they are just the truth and there are some women out there (as well as men) that need to hear it. I respect anyone who's honest about their thoughts, because what Lyfe proves is that even though you may not WANT to hear it, you sure do NEED to hear it. The rest of the songs on here weren't that great for me, but the ones I've given titles to more than make up for it. I ordered his new cd as soon as it came out!
