The story starts out with a prologue in the early 1960's with a young man being entrapped by a Florida legislative committee in order to get ammunition against Jim Sullivan, the sitting governor. Rather than betray his family, the young man commits suicide. I wanted to learn more about this college student, but the book then jumps forward to modern day Miami.
Jack Sullivan, the grown son of Governor Jim Sullivan, is an assistant State Attorney prosecuting a cop for the death of a black infant. You can feel the tension as the town is on edge, with some siding with the Cuban policeman and others championing justice for the little girl. Jack's ex-wife had just been appointed as State Attorney and is his new boss. After finishing the case, Jack leaves the prosecutor's office and joins his father's law firm.
After Jack finishes his first day at the firm, he goes to a presidential fundraiser at his father's seaside mansion on Biscayne Bay, for Florida Senator Benjamin Westcott. Jim is killed after all of the guests and the help leave. The only one with him in the house is his beautiful young wife, Carmen.
The police naturally suspect Carmen. Sylvia Wescott, the wife of the candidate, is determined that Carmen be prosecuted for the crime, going so far as to promise the post of Attorney General to the special state attorney handling the case. That begins a wild ride through the legal and political world of Miami, including a payoff at the end that ties the prologue neatly into the main story.
I stayed awake to finish the book in one sitting. It was that good. This was as good as Grisham at his best and it reminds me of the both "The Firm" and "The Pelican Brief" in terms of pacing and plot twists. You will not be disappointed with this book.

This is a very interesting mix of politics and suspense. A well crafted and intelligent story of the inner workings of political rivalries and a wife who will stop at nothing to get to the ultimate pinnacle, first lady.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy cleverly worked plots and suspense.
This is the first book I have ready by Stephen Cody and I will read more.
