Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Malcolm Bilimoria, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book describes the management of various solid tumors from a surgical oncologist's point of view. Epidemiology, presentation, staging, and treatment of various tumors are highlighted.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference source that general surgery residents and surgical oncology fellows can use on a daily basis. Given the increasing diagnostic and treatment options for the surgeon and the cancer patient, the book is extremely important.
Audience: It is targeted for general surgery residents and surgical oncology fellows for whom it will have great use. Surgical attendings may find the text useful in comparing their own surgical oncology practices with those of the surgeons at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Features: The illustrations are of good quality but are limited in number. The table of contents is concise and easy to follow. The references are extensive and timely, confirming this text as an up-to-date reference handbook. As an added feature the book is sized to fit into a lab coat pocket, thus increasing its accessibility.
Assessment: This handbook comprehensively covers all aspects of solid tumors and the patients afflicted with them. There is emphasis on epidemiology, staging, diagnosis, and treatment of these carcinomas. More importantly, however, the handbook explains in detail the philosophies of the department of surgical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Though there are few illustrations, this is more than made up for by the text, which is easy to follow and supported by up-to-date, practical references. This handbook should be a part of every medical library, and I highly recommend it for surgery residents and surgical oncology fellows.
