Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Rhyming couplets with lively rhythm lead the reader through an easy to digest musical alphabet. The poems that encompass instruments, musical genres, composers, and music terms are accompanied with bright, bold watercolor paintings. Whether explaining baroque or bluegrass, melody or rhythm the text is spirited, concise, and entertaining. Each page is designed to show the letter in a colorful border that contains additional narrative that expands on the brief poem. The quartet pictured for S is described in the verse, "S is for Strings. They play fast or slow. Just pluck at them neatly or draw with your bow" and the sidebar clarifies just what instruments make up this group and how the instruments are played. For the most part the poems flow well with only an occasional forced rhyme. The writer does have an annoying habit of beginning several poems with "now" and "and." From anthem to zither this lyrical journey is a treat and a great introduction to the world of music. 2004, Sleeping Bear Press, Ages 4 to 12.

Gr 1-3-This musical survey saunters through the alphabet to define a wide variety of terms, instruments, and techniques. Each spread features a rhymed four- or eight-line verse to introduce a word, with the opposite page giving a short definition and examples. Some letters introduce two words: "C is for Conductors" and "Composer" and "D is for Drum majors" and "Dynamic." The verses are appealing, although at times the meter is awkward. Overall, though, the author successfully introduces a wealth of information without overwhelming readers. The watercolor artwork is serviceable but does not approach the imaginative illustrations that dance across the pages of Aliki's Ah, Music! (HarperCollins, 2003) or Kathleen Krull's M Is for Music (Harcourt, 2003), the latter using the same alphabetical approach to the subject.
