This third edition of an in-depth review of the use of bedside ultrasound for medical providers includes needed updates as well as new chapters on pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Purpose: Ultrasound is a quick and safe diagnostic modality that has been shown to improve patient care. The purpose of this book is to enhance the knowledge and utility of point-of-care ultrasound for medical providers in the emergency department and other medical settings. As with past editions, this one fully meets the authors' objectives.
Audience: While emergency medicine and critical care providers will find this book very useful, clinicians in most medical specialties can enhance patient care using the information it provides. It is written so that medical students and midlevel providers will find it useful as well.
Features: The book covers a wide range of bedside ultrasound applications as well as basic physics and logistics. It includes an overview of the basics of ultrasound training and physics, followed by a thorough chapter-by-chapter review of a variety of applications for ultrasound. Each chapter is organized in a similar format, consisting of clinical indications, anatomy, technique, and common abnormalities. High quality illustrations of normal and abnormal ultrasounds appear throughout every chapter. Pitfalls are summarized at the end followed by relevant clinical vignettes, emphasizing the important diagnostic implications with ultrasound.
Assessment: Although the title includes the word "emergency," any midlevel provider or physician who uses point-of-care ultrasound will find this book extremely valuable. It includes an extensive review of the various clinical applications for point-of-care ultrasound. Both novices and experienced practitioners will find this book useful, with its overview of basic techniques and normal anatomy, followed by a comparison with pathologic findings and abnormal ultrasounds. Importantly, the image quality in the book and accompanying DVD is excellent.
