Overview

There are memorable teams in baseball—and then there are utterly unforgettable teams like the 1975 Cincinnati Reds. From 1972 to 1976, the franchise known as the Big Red Machine dominated the National League, winning four division crowns, three league pennants, and two World Series titles. But their 1975 season has become the stuff of sports legend.

In The Machine, award-winning sports columnist Joe Posnanski captures all of the passion and tension, drama and glory of this extraordinary team considered to be one of the greatest ever to take the field. Helmed by Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson, the lineup for the '75 Reds is a Who's Who of baseball stars: Pete Rose, Ken Griffey, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, George Foster, Cesar Geronimo, and Dave Concepcion. Like a well-oiled engine, the '75 Reds ended the regular season with 108 wins and finished a whopping 20 games ahead of their closest division competitor, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But that remarkable year was not without controversy. Feuds, fights, insults, and run-ins with fans were as much a part of the season as hits, runs, steals, and strikeouts. Capturing this rollicking thrill-ride of a story, Posnanski brings to vivid life the excitement, hope, and high expectations that surrounded the players from the beginning of spring training through the long summer and into a nail-biting World Series, where, in the ninth inning of the seventh game, the Big Red Machine fulfilled its destiny, defeating the Boston Red Sox 4-3.

As enthralling and entertaining as the season and players it captures, The Machine is the story of a team unlike any other in the sport's glorious history.

A must have for all baseball fans.

Joe Posnanski captures the essance of the 75 Big Red Machine. I found myself sharing many of the stories told in the book to my close friends. Posnanski gives a great look at not only the superstars (Rose, Bench, Morgan and Perez)but the other players that made this team one of the all time greats. Great care is taken to give each player there just do and many intimate details are shared. Outstanding read.

    Big Red Machine

Disappointed. I was 7 yrs old when the Reds won the 75 Series. I remember my parents yanking me out of bed in the 9th inning so I could see the final outs and watching them jump up & down with excitement. I was hoping to relive some of those same emotions while reading this book, but it fell significantly short.
I liked the interviews with some players, and the insight within the clubhouse. I was surprised at how Griff felt like an "outsider" to the group, but I had come to understand the Big 4 "owned" the clubhouse. Its no different than any other clubhouse with any sport at any time...some personalities dominate while others just blend in.
I guess I was expecting more from player interviews, coaches interviews, opposing player interviews....just more of everything. Even more, the book recites repeatedly how 75 W.S. was the greatest ever played. If so, I would expect more content on the Series...Red Sox interviews, Marty, more opposing player interviews, tv broadcaster/MLB resource interviews. Honestly, I don't remember word one about Joe Nuxhall in the book...and we all know his impact on the Reds as a player, but he was the other "voice" of the Reds during this historic period.
I could've gone without the over-played rants of Pete Rose at the end. I'm the biggest fan in the world of his play/attitude/pitbull mentality between the lines. But agree or disagree with MLB's standing on him, he dug his own grave. If the author would have kept Pete on topic with his thoughts on the Series and on the team emotional roller-coaster during the playoffs, I would've appreciated it more.
One person's opinion on this book, but I could easily see adding 150 pages to the effort and diving much deeper into what I've mentioned above. I just expected more......

    I Also Recommend:

    Great book!

This is my personal favorite time in baseball. I was ten years old and these guys were bigger than life. this book brought back a lot of memories and filled in a lot of details i didn't know.

Even if you weren't ten at the time i think the book holds a lot of interest. It captures a time in sports right before free agency and money took over, for better and worse. You get a great look into culture and society at the time.

Posnanski has a tremendous ability to tell a story. thru his research and narrative you feel like you are right there for it all. I'm a big fan of his blog and sports illustrated column as well.

    Great Baseball Book

Posnanski writes in a very conversational manner, although there are some parts that are too conversational. It reads just like a novel with great insights into the Cincinnati Reds.

When teams personified cities and cities personified teams

What a great retrospective. Having grown up in Cincinnati with the Big Red Machine, this was certainly a worthwhile trip down memory lane. Joe Posnanski, however, provided much more insights into the team I thought I knew, and now know much better.

Whether you are a fan of the Reds or a baseball fan in general, this is a great read into what motivited this team. Widely regarded as the best team on the field at the time, they knew they couldn't truly claim that until they won a championship. This book details the frustrations, the nuances, the personalities and the sheer will to be the best. Their legendary status is testament to what they accomplished in 1975 and again in 1976.
