“A lighthearted series, sure to please girls all too aware of the impending approach of middle school.”
Children's Literature - Renee Farrah Vess
The second book in the "Mackenzie Blue" series finds our heroine Zee preparing for the student-run rock musical and hoping to gain the attention of her crush, Landon. As Zee tries to show her dedication to the musical by taking on multiple leadership roles, her attitude begins to scare off her friends. However, she does not always notice, as she is preoccupied with spending as much time as possible with Landon, in order to gain his affection. On Friends' Day, Zee gets a card from a secret admirer and is convinced it is from Landon. Her other friends are not so sure, and the notoriously snobby Kathi has been suspiciously friendly despite her previous betrayal of Zee. Trying to balance schoolwork, a crush, friends, and a long distance friendship with her best friend Ally, Zee needs to learn time management and set her priorities straight. There are cartoon illustrations, and the character lineup in the beginning is fun to help envision the book's cast. Pre-teens will enjoy the school drama, the IM chats, and diary entries. There is not much here for older audiences, except for a glossary of on-line shorthand. Reviewer: Renee Farrah Vess

Gr 4–8—This book picks up where Mackenzie Blue (HarperCollins, 2009) left off. The seventh grader and her friends in Mr. P's music class are going to form a band and put on a rock 'n' roll musical based on Romeo and Juliet. Mackenzie hopes to be the lead while her big crush, Landon, plays opposite her. This sequel is full of elements tweens can relate to, such as texting, mean girls, embarrassing moments, and references to popular culture. The tone is light and positive. Mackenzie texts and emails her friends and writes in a journal. An "Online Glossary" is included, and playful illustrations appear throughout. Fans of Lauren Myracle's Luv Ya Bunches (Abrams, 2009) and Meg Cabot's "Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls" series (Scholastic) will enjoy this one.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH
