Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Dictionaries offer a world of knowledge to students, but sometimes these references bombard young eyes and minds with information that lacks clarity and simplicity. The Macmillan Dictionary for Children is the exception.

Well versed and dependable, lucid and easy to use, this mighty reference offers more than mere words and their meanings. Each section begins with spelling hints for that particular letter. Highlights offer navigation around words that sound alike: For gait, the entry duly notes that "Another word that sounds like this is gate." Budding etymologists will love the "Word History" paragraphs that explain the sometimes ancient origins of the words we use every day. Illustrations, expanded and more detailed descriptions, and various other aids also help to engage curious young minds. A reference section at the back of the book contains a small thesaurus, tables of weights and measures, maps, and other features.

A handy, trustworthy tool for young readers and writers, this volume is a necessity for every student's desk.

Publishers Weekly

This revised edition contain more than 35,000 entries, a readable and helpful set of introductory pages that explains how the dictionary is structured and tips on how to best use the information. There are pronunciation guides, synonym lists, homonyms, color illustrations with captions, spelling tips, entomology and of course the definitions. This new edition has included contemporary terms such as Web, Web browser, HTML, and hypertext. The dictionary also contains a list of the U.S. Presidents, the states, and countries of the world with information such as the name of the capital, population, area and monetary unit and a color representations of each flag,. Full color maps of the world and the solar system plus a table of weights and measures round out the volume. An extremely useful dictionary for home and school at a reasonable price.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-8--Modeled closely after the 1989 edition, this revised dictionary contains 35,000 entries with well-placed, full-color photographs and illustrations on almost every page. Many timely words have been added--karaoke, Velcro, Internet, online, alimony, rap (music), and telecommunications--but not modem or clone. When there are multiple meanings, each is numbered. Illustrative sentences often follow definitions. The syllabication, pronunciation, plural, and parts of speech round out each entry. Homophones are listed; for selected words, examples of synonyms are used in sentences. Word histories are given for interesting cases and are set off by red bars. Green bars indicate language-usage notes, explaining words such as ain't, among, capital/capitol, real/really, emigrate/immigrate. Spelling tips are offered at the beginning of each letter section. An excellent usage guide, an extensive history of the English language, and a pronunciation key are provided. A final reference section contains portraits and brief facts about the presidents, flags with brief statistics about the countries they represent, several maps, and weights and measure conversion charts. This version updates the presidential information and expands the flag section but does not include a time line. Attractive and easy to use, this new edition has retained the best of its predecessor and has modernized its look and contents.--Priscilla Bennett, State University of West Georgia, Carrollton
