Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
One day you're designing web sites with Dreamweaver. Next day, they've handed you a copy of Dreamweaver Ultradev, and told you, "database-enable that site.". If your mother didn't raise you to write web database applications, don't fret: Get Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev: Fast & Easy Web Development. It's the gentlest, most visual introduction to UltraDev you're likely to find.

You won't learn everything here, but Aneesha Bakharia does give you a great jumpstart on the basics. Planning your site. Working with UltraDev's peachy-keen Server Behaviors. Validating and retrieving form data (no coding, it's all point, click, and dialog boxes). If you're providing the database, too, Bakharia walks you through the basics of setting one up, using Microsoft Access. Whatever your data source, you'll learn how to retrieve data; build SQL queries using UltraDev's reasonably friendly tools; insert and update records; and more.

UltraDev can support JavaServer Pages, ColdFusion and Microsoft's ASP. Bakharia doesn't cover JSP or ColdFusion, but if you're hosting on Microsoft's IIS, you'll appreciate the bonus coverage of ASP -- including an accessible chapter on automating email responses.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains 5 advanced bonus chapters, plus a complete 30-day trial version of Dreamweaver UltraDev. Take it home, fool with it, and look as if you know what you're doing. (Bill Camarda)

    Don't waste your money!

This book is poorly written. It starts in the first chapter explaining the most simple things like how to open and close programs and then in the second chapter it jumps to programming. If you need the basic instructions on how to open and close a program and save a file, then you will only understand chapter 1 and the rest of the book will be useless to you. There was very little explaination on how the programming works though. The book shows you how to add programming items using Dreamweaver, but if you do not have prior programming knowledge, they will be of little help to you.

    Don't Bother

I DO NOT Recommend this book at all. Not only is it poorly written, but the examples are hard to read as well as understand. The so-called step by step instructions are very vauge, it leaves too much up in the air, I like a book that takes you through step by step with nice examples that are easy to view and understand. This book is not worth the money, spend your money and buy the Macromedia Video Training tape - Dreamweaver UltraDev, the video tape is incredible as a excellent tool to learn this program!!

    Well written book

I have been an instructor on Front page for only 1 year. I have worked with Flash 4.0 and 5.0 for only 6 months. I know very little, if any coding. With that history I must say that this book was the easiest to understand that I have read. This book builds on eachothers lessons which just increases your confidence with every page that is read. In the future when I buy other books of this nature I will look for this Author and also the publisher. Finally a program that very little programming is used. I will leave the programming to the folks that do that everyday. I can now create a visually appealing page with functionality. If your wondering which book to buy for Ultradev and you have my type of background get this book!

its a good book to bring u up speed

Hum.. this is a really good book. I like graphics and pictures alot. No way you get lost. Simple yet understandable. Even it didn't cover everything Dreamweaver ultraDev has to offer, but it did offer the things i was looking for. Fast and easy - web development with ASP. If you are looking for a head start with ASP like me, or alredy know ASP, but looking for a fast way to do things. This is the book. ALSO Dreamweaver UltrDev Rocks... Its 'extension' rules... So damn cool and easy to use...

    Absolutely Excellent!

Visual Learners, Rejoice!!! No dull geek-speak text here... This is an AWESOME training/tutorial on UltraDev. Each step is graphically illustrated, with arrows pointing to all the various buttons and steps to take. Along the way,'notes' are included to further clarify the ideology behind what is being described. This book is written at a level newer designers (with some experience) can understand easily but it encompasses advanced features so you won't feel like you're reading a primer if you happen to be a seasoned developer. I do advise having a bit of knowledge about Dreamweaver, as this isn't an in-depth explanation of all of Dreamweaver's features. If you're looking to get up to speed FAST with UltraDev, THIS IS THE BOOK TO INVEST IN!You CANNOT go wrong!

    Great Beginners Book!!!

WOW. Will you believe it if I told you that I knew nothing about UltraDev 3 days ago and have already built a database-enabled Web site. I guess not, but it is totally true. I'm a designer and only just getting into web design. I've been using Frontpage but was really interested in learning Dreamweaver. More and more of my clients are wanting some sought of database functionality. So I took the plunge and purchased Dreamweaver UltraDev. The manuals were not very helpful and I was totally lost. I could not understand the terminology eg Repeat Region????? This book was an excellent introduction to UltraDev and ASP. It makes everything seem really easy (lots of screen grabs and step by step instructions). I learn't how to retrieve data from a database, search a database (from a form), display search results, link to a detail page, delete reconds, update records and add records. There is a great chapter on writing SQL queries in UltraDev - so you can retrieve just the data that you require. There are also chapters on sending email, reading/writing files on a server and a basic introduction to ASP (loops, conditionals, functions, subroutines). This book was an easy read. I was able to finish it in about 2 days. This is a great beginners book.
