Following the exercises in this book may be a great way to learn Flash, but if you're looking for a reference, this is not it. Descriptions and explanations in this book are directly related to their own exercises and not to Flash in general. Difficult to decipher Flash techniques from the book's specific lessons (making a snowboarding site) so I'll have to purchase another, more general text.

If you are new to the confusing wonders of Flash MX then this book is definitely for you. For a thorough grounding in tools, through animation and tweening and into advanced topics such as incorporating video and Action Scripting, this is all you need. Delightfully written and easy to follow.

This is only for people who've never actually learned how to use FlashMX However, if you already learned most of the controls and tools in MX, there's no need for you to buy this book, since you will learn very little of something short of new.

This book claims to be hands on and teach you to build movies with little effort. This is very true. It is more like a workbook than just a reference or regular manual. Every step of the way is guided with pictures and explanations. It is more than just step-by-step excerises. It explains why you do what you do for each step. This book gives an excellent introduction to Flash MX. I read some bad reviews of this book by people who obviously had misperceptions of the book. It is meant for the novice. It is not an intermediate or advanced book. Those bad reviews I read were by people looking for something more. This book fulfills all that it promises. I have tried and failed many times to teach myself Flash, until I found this book. I love Flash now and have a strong foundation of it now because of this book. Yes, the book leaves you wanting more, but then it is only an introductory book. For those first getting into Flash. Keep in mind that Flash 5 and Flash 6 (MX) are different and the excerises in this book would not work with Flash 5, so I had to upgrade. If you are first starting out, try to get the latest which is Flash 6 (MX). Not quite sure what is the difference between MX and non-MX, but it is always good to have the latest.

This author has an almost uncanny ability to second guess questions that readers may have while working through her tutorials. Every time I found myself questioning something, I'd turn the page and there would be the answer! Amazing!!!! I also read her dreamweaver HOT book, and it was the same way. The author is very intuitive and clearly knows how to teach her material in a way that promotes understanding. By far the best author of computer instruction books I've come across.

That is all I can say!! I also have four other flash books collecting dust on my shelf. Garbage, all garbage! If it's a cold winter I'll have plenty of fire kindling. I have figured out how to get by with flash. NOW I'm on my way to understanding flash, because of this intense, step by step,hands on training manual. Any one can write a reference manual, but it takes a very fine person to write a complete class in a book~

I was introduced to Lynda's books in college with Dreamweaver 4.0. We used the H.O.T. Dreamweaver book for the course and by the end of the course I had a pretty good handle with Dreamweaver. The same can be said about the H.O.T. Flash MX book. Well worht the money, a must have.
