Overview

"Let's have a parade" is the phrase that begins a beloved American tradition, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1924, employees of the R. H. Macy and Company store in Herald Square, many of whom were immigrants and first-generation Americans, chose to give thanks for their good fortune in a manner reminiscent of the festive parades held in their native countries. The excitement and praise from crowds lining the route that first year led Macy's to issue an immediate proclamation: the parade would become a tradition. Before the parade's first decade passed, Macy's welcomed the huge and spectacular helium character balloons that became its goodwill ambassadors.

Since then, the parade has become a world-famous treasure. Through rare and historic images, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade offers readers a chance to reminisce, explore, and delight in eighty years of this thoroughly American celebration.

After 80 years, it's hard to imagine Thanksgiving without the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. C'mon, we all have our warm and giddy memories whether you bundled up and lined the streets of New York or watched the NBC telecast from the cozy confines of your living room. This wonderfully readable and authoritive year by year history will get people of all ages relive the sights and sounds of parades gone by. Who doesn't remember celebrities from Danny Kaye to Dolly Parton waving to the crowds, or, of course, Santa arriving in Herald Square to annouce the official start of the holiday season? But the biggest stars of the parade and this book are the giant balloons. Stunning photographs both black and white and in color give life to likes of cartoon favorites like Mickey Mouse, Bullwinkle, and Under Dog (the popular favorite of baby boom generation)from their creation at Goodyear to their debuts down Broadway. Also, the photographs from puplications such as the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS chronicle the changing face of New York City since it early days as a melting pot of proud immigrants to the shining 'Big Apple' we know today. All that and more in a perfect compact size that can be summed up in one word: 'fun.'

While several books have visited the subject, this is without a doubt the 'almanac' of the greatest parade of all, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Childhood memories of Thanksgiving recall the turkey roasting in the oven and the sounds of Macy's Parade on the living room television. For others, it might be their first parade (in person) or the memory of gazing skyward as the majestic 'Underdog' balloon drifted above our hearts and minds. This book documents the history of the parade from it's humble beginning in 1924 as the 'Macy's Christmas Parade' as it evolved to become New York's gift to the nation, and then the world. Started by Macy employees who were first generation immigrants from far away homelands who wanted to share their various cultural traditions with America, their new home- the parade is and continues to reflect the multi-cultural melting pot that is New York and America. It is a celebration of the simple every-day things in life and it gives thanks. As does this book in all it's grandure. It is a Macy Parade lover's memory book, filled with dozens of images- some seen for the very first time in print. It is a tribute to the dedicated team at Macys who produces this annual spectacle and to the thousands of participants who have marched down Broadway over the last 78 years. It is written by two lifetime parade fans. For anyone who loves the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, this book will bring hours of joy and happy memories.
