Overview

Mad with Flowers and Tears consists of poems and songs, written between 1950 and 2010, selected and arranged as an “Opera” in four Acts and one Interlude, corresponding to life's dramatic stages of love, from childhood to death, and concluding with Encores and a final Curtain Call, from which the book’s title is drawn. Though not a memoir, one thing clearly comes after another, as in life and karma. Yet each poem and song also stands alone.
Embedded are several operatic settings and references, but no experience of opera is needed to enjoy the storyline, emotional waves, stages of life, and shifts of 'tone, instruments and keys'. Along the way is a good variation of the romantic, tragic, and comic. And some ambiguities: Who is the conductor? Who the hero? But the heroine is certain: The dedication is: To You, my loves, the real, the imagined, and the both.
