Prolific screen star Isabelle Huppert turns in another fine performance with her frequent collaborator Claude Chabrol (e.g., Story of Women, La CA©rA©monie) as the dissatisfied wife in Gustave Flaubert's classic novel. An inconsistent use of narration, some abrupt editing, and an overly languid pace detract from an otherwise well-mounted period piece. A bonus doc looking at Huppert's career provides compensation.
