Overview

While Bernie Madoff may have pulled off one of the biggest financial scams ever, the details of his life and long-running ruse are still cloaked in mystery with more questions than answers. Until now.

In Madoff with the Money, Oppenheimer goes behind the glaring headlines, the myriad lawsuits, indictments, and complaints to tell the real story of the enigmatic, bizarre life of Ponzi King Bernie Madoff-who Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Madoff victim Elie Wiesel called "a thief, scoundrel, criminal...psychopath [is] too nice a word for him." From dozens of exclusive, news-making interviews with the people who knew Madoff best-or thought they did-a shocking portrait emerges. From the one-time nobody who uses his cunning and street smarts, we see emerge a respected Wall Street titan, all the while leading a twisted life with multiple personas like a financial Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
After Bernard Madoff was exposed as "the world's greatest scammer," stories circulated about would-be clients who in past years had gone to him wondering how his "split-strike-conversion strategy" could yield such astronomical results. Invariably, Madoff would wave away their doubts by naming a few investors and assuring them that the Securities and Exchange Commission tightly ruled the entire industry. Fifty billion lost dollars later, we have all gotten to know Madoff much better, but not as well as author Jerry Oppenheimer, who in this book provides startling revelations and heartbreaking glimpses into the lives that Bernie ruined. A story that would have left Gilded Age Robber Barons rapt with envy.

    Thorough without being protracted

This summary of Madoff's life makes it clear that he didn't "accidently" get into his Ponzi scheme as he claimed: he was a crook from the start and came from a family of crooks. The book is thorough in describing the fraud, yet not overly long and does not go into great financial detail. One wonders about the IQs of some of his victims; it seems that many of those people should have known Madoff was a scamster. An excellent choice for someone who wants some knowledge of what went on.

    Informative

I bought this book because the library had only one copy and there was a waiting list. My money wasn't wasted. Oppenheimer did a good job researching his subject. The reader is given some keen insight into Bernie Madoff's upbringing, education and his rise before the very public fall. My only problem with this book is that Oppenheimer often jumped around from one decade to the other when telling Madoff's story. While this may have been necessary, I found it a bit annoying. Otherwise, a great read for anyone interested in Bernie Madoff.

I found the personal feelings of the author mixed with the interviews of Madoff's victims very sad and also interesting considering that many were experienced investors who were burned so bad.

One has to wonder what goes through Madoff's mind as he spends the rest of his life in prison; does he actually face his own sad legacy, so very sad, knowing that his son has committed suicide and his wife no longer wants to be known as Mrs. Madoff.

After all is said and done: Does Bernie believe that, on one hand, the memories of leading the grandest life, and, on the other hand, the immence pain that he caused to so many investors, was it worth it?
