Overview

Born into a typical middle-class home near Detroit, Michigan, Madonna Louise Ciccone soon proved herself anything but typical. Her talent as a dancer earned her a scholarship to the University of Michigan. She left college, however, to seek stardom in New York City. After arriving in the city with just a few dollars in her pocket, Madonna soon became a singer in a rock band. When a DJ heard her demo tape, he sent it to a record company executive who quickly signed her to a contract. More than 25 years later, Madonna has sold more than 200 million albums, starred in a number of hit movies, and is one of the most recognizable faces on the planet.
