I bought this book for my boyfriend, because I am from El Salvador, and he MUST learn spanish to speak to my mom! This book is great to learn the language! The author teaches the most important parts first and then goes into more detail, and she also makes you understand the relationship between english words and spanish words, so you easily understand how to pronounce them. Also she teaches conversations early in the book, so you can actually start practicing. I am so glad I bought this book for my boyfriend! After just a few weeks from starting the book he can actually converse with my mom! :o)

I bought this book about 6 years ago. I just came to this site to see if she had any other materials available and decided to write this review. Like I said, I bought the book about 6 yrs ago but just decided to read it last spring in preparation for a missionary trip that I was taking to Mexico. Well, the book was very helpful, but I crammed in about 2 months and forgot most of what I had learned when I got there. I came home in July and reviewed everything I read and read about 3/4 of the way through the book. I went back to Mexico again in September. The difference was amazing! I have never taken a Spanish lesson in my life, yet with the help of this book I was able to communicate quite well with the kids. I could get most ideas across to adults, and could converse enough to buy goods at the store. I am trying to finish the book before I go back in January, but I want to say, I cannot picture it being any easier than this. This book is great. It makes it fun, and through repetition and exercise you really learn enough to get by without a huge amount of effort. Thanks Margarita!!

This book is well-organized and clear enough to make learning Spanish on your own a lot of fun. For starters, the book provides an introduction to Spanish grammar, followed by verb lists, exercises on forming sentences, and exercises on translation. I would recommend it to both beginners and to Spanish speakers looking for a refresher course or reference material. The author focuses quite a bit on cognates - the words that are similar in both Spanish and English - so you can build your vocabulary pretty quickly and easily. Also, this book addresses past tense before you get to the present tense, which is great for learning conversational Spanish. The exercises are also useful because they give you plenty of practice, plus the answers are provided so you can check on your progress. If you really want to make the most of this book, try using it with the Learning Spanish Like Crazy audio course. It will teach you a lot of spoken Spanish in a way that will help you retain everything you've read and learned in Madrigal's. I would highly recommend keeping this book on hand as a learning tool and as a reference for later on in your Spanish studies.

It is absolutely great. It makes the study and teaching easy, fun and very enjoyable. I, as a Spanish teacher in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, have personally learned a lot about my own language and been able to help several people who have been inmersed with me into the fascinating world of learning the spanish language. In ten years teaching Spanish I have worked with this book and all my students who know it, have a very nice opinion about it and, in order to learn Spanish by themselves when it is not possible for them to be tutored, my students keep asking me what method is the best and I have always reccomended this one since I have seen so many other ones and some of them are boring, complicated, slow and take a long time to get through the whole book and, at the very end, they end up just speaking a few sentences. Some other methods are great, but I find this one as the best. I also want to thank this exceptional author for habe been written this great book, which is for me an excellent support tool in my everyday leesons.

I have purchased 30 or more books teaching Spanish to the non-speaker. . . this one is by far the best. Simply learning vocabulary is not enough when trying to communicate in Espanol, whether you are attempting to speak or to listen. This book easily and fully explains the how and why of this beautiful language, complimenting any good Spanish dictionary. Learning a new language is a slow process and Ms. Madrigal lessens your fears and helps you to succeed at your own speed. If you can only purchase one book - this MUST be it!

This book helped me speak, read, and write in Spanish as if I was a native speaker! I completed the course in only 3 weeks. I couldn't put the book down.

This book is so helpful! It begins explaining how there's thousands of words in Spanish that you already know. For instance, English words ending in -or- like doctor, professor, aggressor etc... are the same. Also this book goes on to explain how to convert English forms of words into Spanish quickly and easily. I really like how this book teaches the past tense first which is what we mostly use in our stories and discussions with people anyway. This book has been so helpful and has given me an understanding of the Spanish language that I never had before. Is it easy to learn a new language? NO. It takes work and dedication and practice but the book certainly makes it easier. My only negative opinion is typos. Typos are abundant in this edition and I wonder if I had the hard copy if it would be so riddled with spelling errors and typos. Somebody needs to have edited this better like say, an actual NATIVE speaker who could spot these things quickly. That is the only reason I gave it a 4 star rating.

This is the BEST Spanish book I have come across. I would give it 6 stars if there were 6 to give.It is easy to follow and understand. I have two Spanish text books which are not as great as this book.

I've been using this book as a review, and I am enjoying it. Instead of memorizing lists of grammatical rules, the reader starts by getting rules for converting (many) English words into Spanish. This is a way of easing the reader into learning, and is a great way to build a Spanish vocabulary. On the negative side: There is no recording to go along with it, and the vocabulary is a little dated (learning how to say "Don Ameche did not invent the telephone" is a joke few will get anymore). Nonetheless, I recommend this book to anyone trying to teach tehmselves Spanish.

This one was shown to me by and school teacher, she uses it in her 1-5yr old classes. I bought it and it is very helpful. It stares off in some of the ealiler lesson showing you the class related words in english and spanish, this is helpful in that you gain many words easyer just by the raltionship. For example doctor is doctor in both however the verbal acent is in a different place. The books goes on to add phrases and word banks and more. It your wondering how well one really learns with it, i will say this. I really just read through it pick it up now and then, have trying and i picked up a lot. I knew much of what i heard i did however have trouble with the correct accent since your are just reading the langage.

For beginners, this book is highly recommended. It reads well and is understandable. I started a Spanish class at a senior center, and we started out with words and verbs. What I really needed from the beginning were the words that form sentences, that is, (el-the, una-an, un-a,) This book teaches about how to place endings on words. It is a great tool for any person who is taking Spanish for the first time. It will be a great reference tool as classes progress.
