Editorial Reviews

Cindy K
This has got to be one of the best books I have read in a very long time. I really had a hard time putting this story down. The story pulls you right in and you feel as if you are one of the characters yourself. A few times I had to look up from my IPad to make sure of where I was because I felt like I was right there in the story. The story flows very well no stumbling blocks you are never lost as to what is going on but are on edge as to what happens next.
Brian Braden
Manning sweeps the reader from one scene to the next with tight chapters, efficient descriptions, flowing action, and likable characters.

    AMAZING STORY

First a small disclaimer. I live in the same small town as the author Manning, but I do not know him nor have I ever met him. I saw a post on our local newspaper's facebook page about the book and decided to look it up out of curiosity. I am so happy that I did, because I found a .99 cent Nook book that is one of the best fantasy books I have read in a long time. I gobbled it up, but slowed down at the end because I did not want it to end. There will definitely be a sequel, and I will be waiting and checking often for the release date. Amazing story telling for a first time author, originality, strong likable characters, and villians easy to hate. I found a few editing errors, but nothing to take away from the story. I cannot find one negative thing to say about this book except it was too short and left me wanting more, but I guess that is a good thing for the writer. Give it a chance and see if you do not agree with me that this is a book worthy of high praise and tell all your friends to read it now. I am going to try and get a signed book because I think this young writer has a big future and I can say I was there in the beginning.

Totally awesome and exciting!!!! A must read!!!!

This book has it all, mystery, suspence, action and even a little romance. I couldn't put it down until I was finished. So easy to escape into it, the characters are so real. Can't wait for the sequel.

    Captivating read

The book was an exciting read. Definitley had a bit of everything in it. The characters were great, though i would have liked to get to know some a little better. The story was nothing short of exciting and it pulled me in immediately. There were some editorial mistakes, not the authors fault though. The novel was a bit shorter than i expected but hopefully the second book will be out soon to continue the story.

Everything I Like in a Fantasy Novel

Although poorly edited, and with language that felt out-of-place (the main character even thought about how something wasn't "plain English"...this is a different world, with no mention of English people), I still liked this book enough to give 4 stars.

Mainly because it satisfied some of the main things I like in fantasy books: the main character has powerful magic powers, and the POV says with him most of the time.

Of course, having a powerful main character isn't my only criteria, and this book was fairly well-written considering that the author is self-published.

All the POV switches were a bit disappointing, but at least the author focused on Mordecai's life.

I hope the next novel comes out soon. :) If anyone knows some good books about people with powerful magical powers (and from their POV), just tell me. Though I've read most of the well-known ones. :P

Edit: Ha, I need an editor too.

    great first book

Nice story. Interesting world. Great characters. You can tell it's a first book, but it didn't detract from the story. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

    Great Book

First book by this author. Excellent reading. I usually don't read fantasy type books, but this one was hard to put down once I started reading it.

    Great book!

I really enjoyed the book. The characters were well developed and drew you in to their world. I loved the twists and turns in the storyline. The only drawback was it was not long enough. I am ready for the sequel!

    Amazing Book!

This book pulls you in and keeps you. I had a very hard time putting it down. The characters were very well developed and I became invested in them rather quickly. The plot kept me on my toes, which was rather refreshing. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and at times, I was on the edge of my seat. Magegorn: the blacksmith's son has some of everything! I am definitely anxiously awaiting his next book.

I loved this book. Great plot, great friendships, a little racy but so far nothing graphic. I hope the author can keep it that way. I already bought the second one.

    Unique Prose and Voice

I have ever read a book that switches perspective smoothly and coherently quite like this. Inspired a fellow author to mimic the same. Amazing story. Great job!

Extremely poorly written garbage! The plot is a silly cliche and the whole thing reeks of stupidity. I made it through a few chapters and then permanently deleted the book from my nook in disgust. Avoid like the plague!!!!

    Worth every penny!

Manning manages to create characters and a world so clearly that as you move through the book it is easy to imagine even the littlest of details. The magic, battles, stories within stories he creates are epic and although the idea of a young man coming of age who finds out he can do magic ..... is not new, Manning manages to give it a whole new twist and when you mix that with a truly great and unique writing style, Manning brings a much needed new breath into the world of Fantasy. I imagine we will be talking about this author with the likes of the best. Read the books, you'll see:)

    Juvenile

The dialogue sounds like it was written by a teenager or for teenagers, except for the profanity. The main character is supposed to be an "old soul", but acts and talks like a juvenile, though not excessively so. The only reason i didnt give one star is because its short and the story is decent.
