Overview

In this first book of the Witherspoon Healers trilogy, meet Magee Witherspoon O'Connor, one of three female cousins who have inherited a unique ability to absorb the pain of others and to help heal them. The unstable and unreliable character of the "gift" the cousins have received makes using it a tricky and frustrating process. But not using it is not an option. Each cousin must do her best to integrate the ability into some kind of satisfying life. Finding and holding onto a relationship is their greatest personal challenge.

Magee loves her job as a paralegal at a prestigious law firm in Connecticut but her social life is a disaster. When her friend, Julia, invites her to a party given by a record label to showcase its superstar rocker, Rick Ryder, Magee jumps at the chance to meet him not knowing this party will change her life forever.

Rick immediately pursues her, even manipulating her into working for him. A puzzled and frustrated Magee doesn't at first realize that she is a ringer for his wife, Deirdre, who committed suicide while pregnant with his child. She goes on tour with his band determined to make him wish he'd never laid eyes on her.

Complicating matters is Magee's inherited ability to heal by laying on of hands and to feel strong emotions in others. She quickly discovers that Rick's guilt and pain over the loss of his family will be impossible for the Witherspoon in her to ignore.

As she travels the country, dealing with Rick Ryder every day, she also encounters someone else who doesn't want her taking Deirdre's place, someone who wants him to continue to suffer his wife's absence and deal with the guilt. Magee is attacked and suddenly her life seems to be in danger. She has to figure out exactly what happened to Deirdre so she can avoid being the next one to die.

Along the way, her Witherspoon powers will be tested in more ways than one.
