She stepped down out of his hayloft and walked straight into his heart.

Maggie O'Neill is a runaway, she couldn't take another beating from her father while he was in a drunken rage. Slipping out her bedroom window in the dark of the night, she gathers her animals from the woods, then with only the clothes on her back she heads to an uncertain destination. Ending up in Beau Jackson's hayloft with her canine protector and her three-legged cat, she steps down from the loft and walks right into Beau's heart. Beau Jackson was shocked to find a young woman badly beaten hiding in his barn, offering her a place to sleep, food to eat and a job as his cook while is housekeeper is away, he hopes she will remain with him on his ranch. Finding she has a talent for working with animals, he asks her to help train his yearling horses. As he watches her tend to his sick cow, birth a litter of puppies, and heal one of his injured colts, he begins to fall in love with Maggie. But realizing he must move slowly because, like the young skittish colts she works with, she is a woman that doesn't trust men easily. To Maggie, Beau's ranch is heaven on earth, for the first time in her young life she finds she doesn't have to fear for her safety or those of her beloved animals. But when her father discovers where she has been hiding, Beau wastes no time asking Maggie to become his wife, hoping she feels more than just gratitude for his providing her with a safe haven. MAGGIE'S BEAU is a sweet romance with two lonely people that love the land, God's creatures and each other. Maggie is a strong woman who even when abused, she isn't bitter or hardened, she raises above the pain and hurt to find shelter and happiness in the loving arms of her gentle giant, Beau. It was a treat to see Cord and Rachel McPherson along with their family from THE WEDDING PROMISE (HH431). This reader is looking forward to secondary character Shay Deveraux having his own story April 2001, THE SEDUCTION OF SHAY DEVERAUX, another tall, dark, and mysterious cowboy from the wonderful imagination of Carolyn Davidson. Creepy

Maggie seems very child like and slow. It gave me the creeps reading about a grown man flirting with her. The thought of those two getting married was disturbing and I opted out of finishing this book.
