Curran and Kate, having left the Pack and taken over the Mercenary Guild in Magic Shifts, are dealing with some high-stakes stress. Not only are they planning their wedding, but Kate's father, the immensely powerful Roland, seems determined to push Kate into all-out war by kidnapping Saiman, her sometime ally. In his own weird head game with Kate, Roland also apparently wants to have input in her wedding plans. The power that Kate has inherited from Roland is something she's hidden and fought against using, but she'll have to apply her magic to protect those she loves, not to mention the city of Atlanta. VERDICT Series readers will be pleased that some long-anticipated events finally come to pass in this book, while leaving room for further entries. Andrews's "Kate Daniels" urban fantasies are among the very best, combining heart-wrenching, dark story lines leavened with the perfect amount of humor and a romantic couple readers will root for through thick and thin.—MM

Not the first time, and I doubt the last, that I have read a Kate Daniels novel in one sitting. Ilonia Andrews creates a world that you wanna explore and a story you don't wanna put down. The only thing I hate is, now I have to wait for the next installment to come.

Best. Book. Ever. Every time I read a Kate & Curran book, I'm convinced the series could not possibly get any better. Then the next bright, shiny volume comes along. This one is wonderful. While I'm on the subject, Andrews' "Edge" books were o.k. but not at peak standard for Gordon and Ilona. But the new series that started with BURN FOR ME, and which will continue (SOON?) with WHITE HOT, has all the promise of be coming as enthralling as the Kate Daniels series. Can't wait for the next Andrews opus, in whichever of the two realities.

I have yet to be disappointed when it comes to Ilona Andrews. The details of the weapons, the fight scenes, the twists- all of it makes for another fantastic installment in the Kate Daniels series!

I am so pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed MAGIC BINDS, Kate Daniels #9. Readers have concerns whether a new book will keep up the same quality and momentum in a long running series. It’s especially important to me when authors stay true to their world building and the character’s established personalities. This book succeeds on all levels; the drama is intense and the stakes are very high for Kate and the people in her care. The long delayed wedding plans, which to Kate is a whole new level of torture, are going forward while she desperately tries to find a way to keep her father from fulfilling the dire prophecies of the Witch Oracle who tells Kate if she marries Curran, those whom she loves or will love in the future will perish. The tensions between Kate and Roland continue escalating to the point where he says, “We are going to war, my daughter,” bringing to the forefront what she has been preparing for her whole life. As Kate’s magic and skills using it grows and strengthens, she feels changes happening that worry her greatly. With all that tempting magical power, she does not want to become a monster like her father while trying to fight him. Roland has many nefarious plots in play that challenge Kate’s ability to guard the city she claimed, and her relationship with Curran since she is keeping secrets from him. Kate can hardly catch a break between Roland’s kidnapping Saiman, dealing with the pagan priest, Roman, her official wedding planner who is channeling his inner Martha Stewart, plus a quest to a dark and dangerous place. And facts come to light that make defeating Roland even more complicated for the sacrifice that feat may require. War with Roland seems inevitable; it will take all the combined efforts of Kate and Curran’s allies, some that are very surprising, to prevail. Kate’s very complicated relationship with her father, Roland, and her magic keeps the pressure up while she scrambles to figure out how to win the coming battle royal. How can she deal with a man who wants to rule the world and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal, and yet calls her a most precious treasure? Kate’s love for Curran and determination to protect her family at all costs, her bravery in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds coupled with the wry humor and creative mythologies, makes this book an intense, exciting, and very satisfying ride. Kate Daniels, warrior woman, loves as fiercely as she fights which makes this Urban Fantasy series a top favorite for me.

To me, the very best series have characters that grow, develop in their world. The Kate Daniels series is a prime example. This world continues to develop, to become more complex, we not only get to know the main characters better, but, also their adversaries. Magic Binds is a great book.

This series is fantastic. And I don’t just mean some of the books or even a few of them, but, Every. Single. Book. in the Kate Daniels series. With a lot of series the first few books will be great, and then the story will start to slip a bit. Sometimes the story picks up again, other times, it just keeps slipping. Not so with these books. You should read this series in order. The story is so multi-layered that you will receive more enjoyment out of the books if you don’t miss books or skip around. And characters just become more and more developed. I know I’m telling you nothing about the plot, but that’s because if you’ve been reading from the beginning, you will not want spoilers. And if you need get the first book, Magic Bites, then me telling you about the plot to this one is pointless. I will say that Kate grows even more in this book, and I didn’t think that was possible. Her aunt makes for some wonderful comic relief, and we finally get the showdown with her dad that has been coming for quite some time. But before that, we get to see glimpses into what Roland use to be like, and why he ended up turning into the man he currently is. Another great book in this series, and I am really looking forward to the next one.
