Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Casey is a little boy, and he has a close and special relationship with his father. When Casey's father must go away on business, he talks to Casey and tells him how long he will be gone and where he is going. Casey finds the destination on a map and talks to his mother about missing his father. Casey's mom surprises him with a "magic" box that his dad left for him. It includes new magic markers, and it is delivered with hugs and kisses from his dad via his mom. Casey is so pleased with this thoughtful gift that he makes a magic box for his dad to take on his next trip. This is a sweet story about a loving family, but the most valuable part of the book is the two-page "Note to Parents" by clinical psychologist Ann Rasmussen. Dr. Rasmussen points out several techniques that parents can use to help their children deal with absences of family members or close friends. Many of the techniques mentioned are modeled in the book, plus there are additional practical suggestions to help parents and children stay connected when apart. The illustrations by Karen Stormer Brooks are bright and colorful in a cartoon format. Recommended for parents who want their children to know they are loved when the parents must be away. 2003, Magination Press,
