Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
A beautifully illustrated retelling of Mozart's famous opera combined with an audio CD will enchant both readers and music lovers!
Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
Mozart's last opera is presented as a series of short scenes, making the complex fairy tale more accessible. Fabulous, colorful paintings depict the scenes described in the text. The book is accompanied by a CD containing 16 selections from the opera, performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Bernard Haitink. The reader is cued to the proper selection at the end of each section of text. Curiously, the Queen of the Night's first aria is omitted; this aria introduces her character and makes Tamino's desire to help free her daughter seem reasonable rather than misguided. The recording is somewhat muted; Papageno's panpipes are barely heard and the celebratory chorus at the end doesn't have the usual thunder. Despite these flaws, the book is gorgeous, and serves as a wonderful introduction to opera.
School Library Journal
Gr 4 UpA stunningly illustrated, well-written retelling of one of Mozart's most beloved works. This operatic fairy tale is related in an elegant, clear tone in 15 scenes; most have a single page of text and one facing full-page painting. This technique breaks the rather complicated story into easy-to-follow pieces. Malone's soft oil paintings are full of light; stylized but warm, they precisely catch the flavor of Mozart's vision. Story and pictures are lovely, fresh, and rich, but it is the enclosed CD with 16 selections coded to each page of the book that make this a unique and appealing offering. This reading-plus-listening package is almost as good as being in the audience. Libraries may encounter problems circulating a book with a CD tucked in the back, but this a special item and it deserves a place on the music shelves of most libraries. A beautiful treat for the eyes, the ears, and the imagination.Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY

A great way to learn about Mozart and his music

My son's music teacher recomended, it helps to appreciate Mozart's work. The story is a little complicated for younger kids but the illustrations are good. My son loves to hear the music.
