Editorial Reviews

Carolyn Phelan
A more apt title might have been "Magic, Scientifically" because many of these "magic tricks" appear in books of science experiments. This revision of Cobb's 1976 book by the same title includes reminders of dangers, and the introduction explains new symbols that indicate adult assistance because of flames, poisons, fumes, or possible "damage to skin, eyes, or clothes." Cobb groups the 30 activities under the headings "Mechanical Wizardry," "Fluid Fascinations," "Energy Enchantments," "Chemical Conjuring," and "Perceptual Puzzlements." The text has been somewhat rewritten, though the content is basically the same. New shaded line drawings replace the old illustrations. Recommended for purchase where the subject is of interest, the safety issue is paramount, or the old copies are battered.
