Meet the Author

Devon Monk has one husband, two sons, and a dog named Mojo. She lives in Oregon and is surrounded by colorful and numerous family members who mostly live within dinner-calling distance of each other. She has sold over fifty short stories to fantasy, science fiction, horror, humor, and young adult magazines and anthologies. Her stories have been published in five countries and included in a Year's Best Fantasy collection. When not writing, Devon is either knitting, remodeling the house-that-was-once-a-barn, or hosting a family celebration.

    BookWhisperer Review: Magic on the Hunt by Devon Monk

    The Allie Beckstrom series has been a well loved favorite personally for The BookWhisperer over the past few years. Allie is a very entertaining character; that while obviously not bullet proof she has the courage and power of even the strongest characters. With the circumstance of the fifth book I had concerns as the the future of Allie and Zay, and just what would be the repercussions of giving her magic for his life. It appears with this novel that she is not at a disadvantage with the lack of some of her own power. Although, much of this could be contributed to the fact that Allie's father is taking up residence in her body. Allie seems to be learning even more magic with the help of her father. I am beginning to wonder if he is truly the monster that we have believed over the past five books. The Allie Beckstrom series is more action packed novels with a slightly twist of romance. Zay and Allie continue to love and fight their way through the novels, but at times the lack of intimacy can be frustrating. Zay is a very closed character that true emotion is shown few and far between. This novel was a slightly slower pace than the past novels. I am fairly concerned that this is a preview as to the direction of future novels, and hope that the next novel restores my faith.

    The sixth Magic urban fantasy is a superb tale

    Having done the impossible when they escaped death's realm through the gate (see Magic at the Gate) lovers Allie Beckstrom and Zayvion Jones desperately need some R&R. However, being back in Portland does not denote safe recuperation. Instead Authority leader Sedra's top assistant Dane Lanister arrives with weapons aimed to kill.

    He threatens killing Jones and tearing Allie apart limb by limb until she informs him where Jingo Jingo took the kidnapped Sedra as he believes her father's consciousness inside of Allie's brain will know. At the same time, Dane threatens torture and death, magic practitioner Leander escaped from death's realm, but needs a body to host his essence and believes he has found one in a prisoner locked in the Authority's jail. No time for the weary as Beckstrom and Jones must find Sedra and prevent Leander from causing hell to come to Portland.

    The sixth Magic urban fantasy is a superb tale that has the heroic duet running around trying to prevent two disasters from occurring. Without Sedra, the Authority Council will not just fall apart, but will fight for control. Leander poses a different but as dire a threat at a time when the Council is internally headless. Readers will enjoy trekking the streets of Portland with Beckstrom and Jones who believe they must have brought a bit of death back with them.

    Definitely a must read if you like Allie and her crew

    The plot thickens. This is definitely not a stand-alone book. Monk has continued with her convulted plot line and has made the storyline quite fascinating. I won't give any details but suffice it to say that that Allie's life has gone from bad to worst. Try it - I think you will like and will be waiting for the next book.

    I can't get enough of this series. Action packed and fun with solid characters and a great plotline, as usual!
