Meet the Magic Pickle, a dilly of a superhero who's fighting the food fight against a brotherhood of evil fruits and vegetables who are plotting to take over the world!
Scott Morse introduces one of the most hilarious superheroes ever: a flying, green Magic Pickle!
Magic Pickle is a secret weapon developed in a secret military lab---under little JoJo Wigwam's bedroom floor. The fearless dill superhero meets his match in this feisty eight-year-old. Together they go after Ray Sin, a renegade raisin from the Brotherhood of Evil Produce. Ray Sin has a dastardly plan: to turn every human being on the planet into big, juicy, mindless grapes, so he can rule the world!
When the whole planet's in a dilly of a dilemma, who ya gonna call? Magic Pickle, of course-that buff, green and all-kosher adversary of the scheming Brotherhood of Evil Produce. Dwelling in Capital Dill, a secret lab right beneath the bedroom of intrepid young sidekick JoJo Wigman, Pickle barrels out in this series opener to face the shriveled but powerful Razin', whose plan for world conquest has kicked off with a barrage of well-aimed sour grapes that have turned everyone in JoJo's school into round purple zombies. Morse illustrates this vegetarian adventure with plenty of splotchy, energetic line drawings that switch, for combat scenes, to sequential panels of sound-effects-heavy action. In the end, thanks to JoJo's quick thinking and a brisk shower of strawberry juice, what passes for normality is restored and, as Pickle puts it, "we can raze The Razin' from the roster of rogues." Readers will be smirkin' at the exploits of this gherkin. (Fantasy. 9-11)

Jo Jo Wigman is a pretty normal kid except for having a superhero dill pickle living under her bed. In his efforts to eliminate the Brotherhood of Evil Produce, the Magic Pickle picks up on some unusual activity in the farmer's market, where people are acting sour after consuming lemonade. Jarek, a boy in Jo Jo's class, goes to buy a wagonful of grapes and creates a strange machine that he presents in front of the class that next day. This machine shrivels the grape and creates the Razin', the newest member of the Brotherhood of Evil Produce. The Razin' uses this machine to turn Jo Jo's schoolmates into his army of grapes. With the help of the Magic Pickle, Jo Jo uses the sweetness of strawberries to counteract the tartness of the grapes and return her school to normal while eliminating one more member of the Brotherhood of Evil Produce. The black and white Graphix illustrations perfectly complement Scott Morse's action-packed tale with clear-cut good vs. evil characters. The play on words and punning throughout the narrative teach while they entertain. Morse presents an excellent story with beginner elements that makes this book a great starting point for children just beginning to read graphic novels. Part of the "Magic Pickle" series of graphic novels. Reviewer: Ashley Lawhon
