Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
From earthquake faults to fossils, this nonfiction companion to the original “Magic School Bus” series explains facts about our earth using photographs and lots of illustrations. Ms. Frizzle, the teacher, first tells the class about Mount Everest. Brief paragraphs, labels, and cartoon characters add more information. The teacher gives a “Frizzle Fact” on each subject. The Dead Sea in Israel is described as the lowest place on Earth in the section about rifts in the surface of the Earth. A fault is defined, and there is a short explanation of how earthquakes happen. There are large photos of each subject, such as volcanoes, waterfalls, and glaciers. Several pages each describe types of rocks and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. A slice of rock under a microscope is shown in the part about minerals and crystals. Other sections include facts about fossils, mining, caves, and the inside of volcanoes. A section called, “Biggest, Greatest, Deepest!” contains facts about the tallest sand dunes, highest waterfall, largest cave, etc. “Rock Experts” defines the work of geologists and the study of physics. A table of contents and a glossary are included. The excellent photos and illustrations help make this text interesting and lively. The short facts and cartoon drawings should appeal to young readers. It would be a good addition as a science resource text for schools and libraries. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 7 to 10.
