Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this novel, book one of Pierce's "The Circle Opens" quartet, fourteen-year-old Lady Sandrilene Fa Toren is honing her skills as a weaver of magic. Sandry is the great-niece of the ailing Duke Vedris IV of Emalen, who is recovering from a heart attack. When Sandry discovers a young boy named Pasco, who possesses the unusual talent for dancing spells, she undertakes to teach the boy in the ways of magic. Meanwhile, members of a wealthy merchant family are turning up brutally murdered, their severed heads displayed in public places. Sandry figures out a way to find the murderers by using her own and Pasco's magical talents. Teacher and student work together to ensnare the criminals in a magical trap. There are some vivid violent scenes here, including the grisly murders of women and children that may make this book unsuitable for younger readers. 2000, Scholastic Press, Ages 12 to 14, $16.95. Reviewer: Christopher Moning
School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Sandry, 14, already has her hands full taking care of her uncle Duke Vedris, ruler of Emelan, when she happens upon Pasco dancing magic spells. As the discovering mage, she must now take on his training to help him channel his powers. To complicate things further, someone or something is murdering a family of not-so-honest merchants, and Sandry decides to help investigate. As more people, including innocent bystanders, are murdered, it's up to Sandry and Pasco to find the culprits and help bring them to justice. Magic Steps (Scholastic, 2000) is the first title in Tamora Pierce's "The Circle Opens" series, a spin-off from her "Circle Quartet," but listeners need not be familiar with the previous series to fully enjoy this one. Sandry and Pasco are likeable and strong-willed characters, and the full-cast narration captures their spunk and humorous interactions with Pierce taking the role of narrator. Listeners need not be familiar with Pierce's previous series to fully enjoy this one. This great performance will be popular with fantasy fans.—Sarah Flood, Breckinridge County Public Library, Hardinsburg, KY

    Great book and wonderful characters

If you enjoy lighter reading that you can just enjoy for the story the author lays out for you, I would recommend this book and any of the other books by Tamora Pierce. The author does such a great job with her descriptions of the characters and places that it becomes very easy to visualize and get lost in the story.

    Dancing

This book was asome! I couldn't put it down. The fact that Sandry must do this without the others and the new magic that was only one reason that i thought this book was good. There are so many others but don't take my word for it.

    No better author

If you enjoy fantasy books, then you'll love this one! Tamora Pierce is a talented author who can create the most amazing situations and believable charactors. She is definately my favorite author. All of the Circle Opens books, unlike her other ones, give you a look into how the people in the book's world use detective magic. They are all exciting and thrilling. I would recommend her books to anyone who enjoys magic.

    Magic Steps Book Review

This book is a great book! One of the best books I ever read. It's about a young girl mage named Sandry. Her life is turned upside down when her uncle has a heart attack. He's almost recovered, so, early in the morning, her uncle and she go on a horseback ride. She runs across a young boy, named Pasco, dancing a spell. Since she discovered his powers, she must teach this impatient and stubborn boy how to contain and use his magic. To make things worse, an invisible killer is out to kill a clan of merchants in the town. Only Sandry and Pasco can catch them. Will they succeed? Read this enchanting and suspenseful book by Tamora Pierce to find out!

The Most enchanting Book I ever read

I thought that the Magic Steps was one of the most intricate books I ever read. Tamore Pierce spins her yarns wisely and with much care. She develops a whole tapestry weaving of characters and plots. The outcome was very amazing, It will burn into my memory forever.I believe all her stories and novels are like that, which, in turn makes her an excellent, thrilling, and sophisticated author for children.

    Creative Author

I think it is so neat that Tamora can write such amazing books. Her plots are easy to follow, but they definetly don't make you fall asleep. Tamora is my favorite author. Even though these books are shorter than ones I usually read, she manages to pack in a whole lot.
