Overview

Strange things were happening in Drake House: A perfect rose appearing on a pillow...an antique dress materializing out of nowhere...a mysterious spirit roaming the halls...

Five years after Rachel Lindquist had left California to chase her dreams, she returned home to care for her aging mother, only to find herself chasing a ghost! Addie Lindquist insisted a presence haunted Drake House and had hired noted parapsychologist Bryan Hennessy to investigate, but Rachel knew better than to believe in what she couldn't see—or to surrender to the strong current of desire pulling her towards Bryan.

Bryan had dealt with skeptics before, but convincing Rachel was the biggest challenge of his life. The enchanting beauty had lost faith in everything that wasn't practical, and that included matters of the heart. As Bryan fought her reluctance to succumb to feelings she couldn't control, a second, more sinister force began to stalk them, threatening to drive them from Drake House and from each other—a force that could be banished only by a man who believed in the power of love and...Magic.

    The Best of Both Worlds

Five years ago, Rachel Lindquist left California to chase her dreams - much to her mother's chagrin, dismay, and adamant disapproval. However, after learning that Addie is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, Rachel returns home to try and reconcile the relationship and care for her mother. Unfortunately, the reunion between Rachel and Addie is anything but happy. Suffering the effects of her illness, Addie has a hard time even recognizing Rachel. When, in a lucid moment, Addie does have some memories of her daughter, they are all bad - memories of how Rachel betrayed her by running away with some 'good-for-nothing dreamer' instead of pursuing her illustrious career as an opera singer. To complicate matters, Addie swears that there is a ghost in the house and has hired noted parapsychologist, Bryan Hennessey, to investigate the matter and 'exorcise' the ghost from the premises. Rachel's immediate dislike for Bryan stems from her belief that he is taking advantage of Addie's depleted mental condition and from her disbelief in anything supernatural. This serves to create a tension in the house that is electric. As Rachel tends to the business of putting Addie's affairs in order and preparing to sell the old house so that she may return with Addie to San Francisco, Bryan continues to search for Addie's 'Whimsey'. In the process, a baffling mystery is uncovered and Bryan and Rachel find themselves entangled in a web of danger and deceit, as well as in each other's arms. Somewhere between her romance novels and her mysteries lies Hoag's Magic. The work combines the best of Hoag on love and relationships (as in Sarah's Sin) with the intense, page-turning drama of such works as Lucky's Lady, A Thin Dark Line, Guilty As Sin, and Cry Wolf. True fans of the author will find this a delightful book that provides all of the elements of any good story in true Hoag fashion - romance, suspense, mystery, comedy, and tragedy.

    Good Book

I really liked this book. I am not a big fan of books that delve into fantasy, but this one was done nicely. I liked the way that ghost was trying to help Rachel and Bryan stay together.

    Lite Romance story

This was romance with a touch of mystery but w/o suspense. Not particularly riveting, but more for those looking for something lite, fantasylike, and "sweet". Published in 1990, one of Hoag's earlier efforts. I much prefer her later thriller/susense novels that grab u by the throat to the end.

    Dark Magic 14

While all that at the Crystal Empire was happening, lets look at what Ponyvilles up to... Spike heard a bang from downstairs, then a howling. He immediatley ran down there, and was face-to-face with a Timberwolf. He burnt its muzzle, makkng it screech in pain and anger. Rarity yelled "Spike, whats happening?!" Spike fought off the wolf. "Stay up there!" He called. Then he ran up to their room and slammed the door shut. Rarity got out of bed. "Is there an attack?!" Rarity asked. She felt a kick and winced. "Timberwolves!" He said, moving furniture in front of the door. Meanwhile... AJ ran through the town, fighting Timberwolves with RD. They couldnt just sit there and let them attack! A wolf scratched AJs face, leaving a bleeding scar. Furious, Applejack kicked the wolf, sending it flying. Rainbow Dash chased it out of Ponyville, the wolf running into the Everfree. Then Dashie rememvered Fluttershy. The weak mare wasnt fit to fight! Neither was Rarity, since she was having a foal in 3 months. Rainbow flew back to AJ. "We need to find the others!" She said. Then RD flew off to find Fluttershy. Meanwhile... Pinkie Pie hopped through Ponyville, easily avoiding the wolves. Her Pinkie Sense told her whenever one would appear. She had decided to go find her friend Spike, since he would be a father soon. Bon Bon ran into her. "Are you crazy?! Run!!!" She shouted. Then she ran off. Oh! And she should visit Rarity, who would soon be a mother! And Fluttershy, so she could try talking her into telling the others about IT. And Rainbow, who was probably kicking Timberwolf butt with Applejack. And Daisy, because- ok, moving on... Meanwhile... Fluttershy was unaware of what was happening in Ponyville. Some Timberwolves had busted down her door earlier, so she had been kind and gave them dog treats. Now, they were sitting in front of her. New Equestrian Record: Timberwolves tamed in 10 minuetes! Just then, Dashie burst in. "Fluttershy! Are you okay?!" Then she saw the trained wolves sitting like domestic dogs. "What the-? Fluttershy! You can train the Timberwolves attacking Ponyville!" Fluttershys eyes widened. "Attacking Ponyville?!" RD facehoofed. "C'mon!"
