Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

This Magic Tree House Fact Checker is about world changers; brave men and women like Florence Nightingale, Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony, John Muir, and Harriet Tubman. This inexpensive trade paperback and NOOK Book doesn't just fact check; it introduces its subjects to young readers with fascinating information, photographs, and illustrations. Editor's recommendation.

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
Six heroes rolled into one terrific book. Meet Florence Nightingale, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John Muir. Though this is written as a companion to a book in the “Magic Tree House” series, this “Magic Tree House Fact Tracker” can stand on its own. Learn how Florence Nightingale gave up her life of wealth to care for sick and wounded soldiers and how hospital conditions have changed since Florence began nursing. Read about how Harriet Tubman rescued over seventy slaves and helped them achieve freedom on the Underground Railroad, and how she risked her life for freedom. Most people know Susan B. Anthony was instrumental in securing women’s rights. But did you know some people threw rotten eggs at her during her speeches? Gandhi was afraid of ghosts as a shy boy, but he grew up to be one of the bravest men in India and helped India become a free country. Martin Luther King, Jr. is known as a Civil Rights leader, but how many knew he followed Gandhi’s teaching of non-violence and peace? John Muir may be the least well-known person described in this book, but he had a great impact on nature, national parks, and even invented a bed that tipped up, causing sleepers to fall to the floor—an early alarm clock. Osborne has a tremendous gift for storytelling, yet this does not disappoint. It flows smoothly and is augmented with black and white drawings and photographs for added explanation and interest. Individuals who were impacted by the featured six heroes are presented, describing the influence each had on many people. Following the text is a wealth of investigatory suggestions: how to do research, suggested books, DVDs, websites, places to visit, and a thorough Index making for a marvelous resource that would enhance any library or homework assignment. Readers already familiar with Magic Tree House books with Jack and Annie will embrace this title as well. Those who are unfamiliar with the series will feel they have found a new friend by the time they finish reading. All books should be this pleasant and informative! Reviewer: Elizabeth Young; Ages 7 to 10.
