Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Soccer is the most popular sport on the planet! Thus begins this book which includes the basics of the playing the game and some interesting facts about it. The roots of the game go back about 4,000 years. Evidence has been found that ancient civilizations in China, Japan, Greece and Rome all played games involving two teams that kicked and moved a ball with various parts of their bodies. One of the chapters features great players including Pele, Abby Wambach, David Beckham, and five others. The World Cup competition was founded by a French lawyer in 1921. It now takes place every four years and is watched by billions of people around the world. Brazil has won the Cup five times and Italy has been victorious four times. Several pages near the end of the book offer suggestions and sources for more research. An extensive index is also included. The black and white photographs of famous players and scenes are supplemented with line drawings, many featuring Jack and Annie from the “Magic Tree House” series. A good source of information for young soccer enthusiasts. Part of the “Magic Tree House” series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.; Ages 5 to 8.
