Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Two magic tricks, "The Right Color" and "The Clinging Pen" are explained and illustrated in the story part of the book. A young boy wearing a red cape and a top hat presents a magic show for several friends and a dog—all of whom seem duly impressed with his feats of trickery. Featuring pictures that are clear and uncluttered, the young reader would be able to easily reenact the simple tricks. Two beginning pages for parents offer suggestions for word play and comprehension discussions. The closing pages contain instructions for creating word search and word families games. Designated as a Level 5 Reader, this book introduces words with the long sounds of "a" and "i," the "ng" sound, and "er" and "ing" endings. A good resource for parents who are home schooling their children and/or those who wish to take an active part in teaching their children to read. Part of the "We Read Phonics" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
