Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
A little mouse wants to know what makes Christmas magic. The story is told in four-line, rhymed verses. Each person replies with something that makes it special for him or herself. Grandpa says that it is a warm fire. Brother says that it is building a snowman and making snowballs. The cousins say that it is sledding. Sister answers that it is giving presents. It is carols, little ones huddled together, and making decorations Grandma replies. "‘It's stringing the tree lights,' says Daddy, ‘That twinkle and glow through the night. It's placing the star on the top of the tree. The magic of Christmas shines bright.'" Mommy says that it is love. This oversize book has cardstock pages and glitter trim on the cover and throughout. The cheerful pictures of busy mice will be fun to talk about. There is no mention of the birth of Jesus. This is an attractive Christmas book for the non-religious. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

PreS-Gr 2

Little Mouse asks his relatives about the magic of Christmas, and they all have different explanations, depending on their particular perspective. "'It's sitting indoors,' says Grandpa, 'where the fire will thaw your cold toes.'" "'It's stringing the tree lights,' says Daddy, 'that twinkle and glow through the night.'" Told in undistinguished rhymes and sweetly illustrated with an abundance of glitter, this book is more appropriate as a gift purchase for adults looking for a sentimental, secular holiday title than for most collections.-Virginia Walter, University of California, Los Angeles
