Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
In this mild variation on Hogwarts for girls, Princess Sapphire and Emerald the Witch prepare to go back to school at Saint Aubergine’s. A big Halloween festival is coming up, and the girls need to learn how to fly, conjure spells, and create a holiday show. This is the fourth entry in the “Magical Mix-Up” series, and for those who are not familiar with the earlier books, the author includes a cast of characters at the beginning. The key element in this book (and the series) is that the reader is required to participate in the plot by creating her own drawings and thus adding details to the story. At times the reader is told what to draw, but sometimes she is encouraged to use her imagination and draw what she fancies. And if the reader has trouble coming up with ideas, there is a “Picture Glossary” in the back to provide inspiration. The author advises the reader to have colored pencils, sequins, glitter, and other arts and crafts tools on hand. In a sense, this interactive story somewhat resembles an advanced coloring book. The illustrations are fun and done in shades of orange, black, and white, befitting a book on Halloween. The characters and the plot are enjoyable (and not at all scary). One wonders, however, why one chapter is entitled “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” (surely the author and editors would not want to the reader to draw comparisons with the famous 1971 Disney movie of the same name). At any rate, this is a nice workbook for young girls who want to enjoy the magic of Halloween without any of the more frightening aspects of the holiday. Budding artists will find it particularly interesting. Reviewer: Leona Illig; Ages 7 up.
