Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Exquisite illustrations are paired with poetry, prose, and medieval legends in this stunning collection. The literary selections are sophisticated and include excerpts from Shakespeare's The Tempest, Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, W. H. Auden's work, and Volksleid (a German ballad). A reverence for "the unicorn with the long white horn" unifies these seemingly eclectic works. The lyrical excerpts lend themselves to being read aloud and the beauty of the language together with Hague's full-page pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations create an enchanting world of cold mountain streams and forests inhabited by wizards and winged fairies. Those who have enjoyed Jane Yolen's Here There Be Unicorns (Harcourt, 1994) will also be interested in this book of unicorn lore. A unique addition to storytelling and fantasy collections.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
