Magick & Misery isn't what I'd classify as horror. It isn't scary at all, actually. Most of the stories end with a bit of nondescript gore or violence, but the rest is just marginally suspenseful buildup to an extremely predictable ending. I certainly wasn't impressed with the fear factor, but I also doubt twenty-somethings are the author's target audience; at least I hope not.
With that said, I think this compilation would be perfect for 8-year-old girl scouts to read around a campfire (as if I have any idea what girl scouts actually do). These stories turn typical childhood experiences and fears, like running away from home or failing a test, into larger-than-life issues with severe consequences.
After reading my last sentence, I'm really not sure why you'd want your kid to read this. No matter, 3 stars for writing something I didn't cringe at and for potentially scaring the pants off bite-size humans.
