Overview

The French symphony has long suffered from an inferiority complex. Many of France's great composers wrote only a single symphony -- Franck, Chausson, Dukas -- while Debussy, Ravel, and others avoided the form altogether. The domination of the repertoire by symphonies of Germanic and Slavic composers has overshadowed many French works, almost entirely obscuring the achievements of Albéric Magnard. Before he was tragically killed at his home by German soldiers during World War I, Magnard produced four large-scale symphonies, all finely crafted and full of melodic invention and rhythmic energy. Thankfully, record companies are finally giving Magnard some much-deserved attention. This recording completes Thomas Sanderling's cycle (begun in 1999 with performances of the First and Third Symphonies), and offers an alternative to the similarly excellent versions on Hyperion by Jean-Yves Ossonce. Sanderling favors broader tempos, which allow Magnard's richly scored textures to resonate, especially in the rhapsodic slow movements. He also brings rhythmic acuity to the suite of dances that form the Second Symphony's scherzo, and to the more urgent drama of the Fourth Symphony's outer movements. The Fourth dates from significantly later in Magnard's career than the first three, and while the composer seems to have absorbed some of the innovations of the first decade of the century, it is still very much a late romantic work. For anyone craving unfamiliar treasures of the symphonic repertoire, Magnard is sure to satisfy.
