Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
The Virgin Mary has always played a central role in the Catholic faith, and composers of sacred music have abundantly praised her. What's most striking about this collection of music dedicated to Mary, spanning from the Gregorian Chant of the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the early baroque, is the sheer variety of it all. The superb a cappella ensemble Chanticleer highlights this aspect through the diversity of its own members, from booming, resonant basses to angelic male sopranos -- men, not boys, who soar above your average countertenor.
These high voices are spotlighted in the antiphons by Tomás Luis de Victoria, while the chant selections are grounded by middle-range voices singing in unison. Secular madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi -- deftly overwritten with sacred texts by a contemporary of the composer -- employ aching harmonies to express spiritual longing, while the choral works of Russian composer Vasily Titov feature animated exchanges among small groups of singers as well as the rich sonorities of the massed choir. Best of all are the sustained, meditative compositions by two Renaissance masters -- John Taverner's Magnificat and Josquin Desprez's Ave Maria and Salve Regina. Chanticleer communicates a hushed rapture in these works, reminding us that they were conceived not merely as beautiful music but as an integral part of religious devotion.
BBC Music Magazine - Nicholas Rast
This is an outstanding disc whose perfect match of timbre and blend in each piece highlights with more than impressive eloquence the extraordinary emotional range [Marian music] inspired in Renaissance composers around the world.

The best vocal ensemble in the US if not the world

Positively the best recording of sixteenth century chant by the best vocal ensemble in the United states if not the world. The vocal range and tonal procision of the all male chorus is beyond amazing it is positivly astounding.
