Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
How do lenses and mirrors work? What is a simple telescope? How about a periscope? In this the best title in the "Amazing Science" series, Bender examines both the tools of magnification and the results. Written for early readers, each double-page spread takes on one topic, using less than 100 words and large illustrations. The writing is clear and concise. For simple telescopes, Bender explains: "A simple telescope is a long tube with a big magnifying glass on the front end and a small one on the back end. Simple telescopes make an image that is upside-down." The "Fun Fact" sidebars offer interesting tidbits about how these magnification tools are used by scientists and others. The illustrations are not riveting, but they are easily understood. This will be a good reference book for young science enthusiasts and others who want to know a little about lenses. Back matter includes an index and a glossary. For more information, young readers are invited to search facthound.com where the publisher has vetted the links.
