Overview

This four-book set contains the “Claire Quartet”—Lady of Devices, Her Own Devices, Magnificent Devices, and Brilliant Devices, an edition of over 250,000 words.

London, 1889. Victoria is Queen. Charles Darwin’s son is Prime Minister. And steam is the power that runs the world.

At 17, Claire Trevelyan, daughter of Viscount St. Ives, was expected to do nothing more than pour an elegant cup of tea, sew a fine seam, and catch a rich husband. Unfortunately, Claire’s talents lie not in the ballroom, but in the chemistry lab, where things have a regrettable habit of blowing up. When her father gambles the estate on the combustion engine and loses, Claire finds herself down and out on the mean streets of London. But being a young woman of resources and intellect, she turns fortune on its head …
A South Bank gang—Snouts, Tigg, Jake, 10-year-old twin girls called the Mopsies, Weepin’ Willie, and Rosie the chicken—soon becomes Claire’s flock. But concealing her secret life becomes increasingly difficult, particularly when a powerful lord proposes and she and her friends are forced to flee on an airship to the American Territories. Will she achieve her goal of a university degree? Will her loyalty to her friends be her undoing when it jeopardizes the plans of powerful men who desire money more than honor? And just how many funerals will her unfortunate mother be forced to arrange?

Editorial Reviews

Amy's Book Den - Amy Acosta
"Shelley Adina's [book] grabbed me from page one and demanded to be read in one sitting!"
Fangs for the Fantasy: The latest in urban fantasy from a social justice perspective - Renee and Sparky
“An immensely fun series with some excellent anti-sexist messages, a wonderful main character (one of my favourites in the genre) and a great sense of Victorian style and language that’s both fun and beautiful to read.”
Readers' Realm - Pauline Creeden
"For those who like the melding of Victorian culture with the fantastic fantasy of reality-bending science fiction, this one will be right up their alley. The author’s voice is unique and appropriate for the historical era."

Meet the Author

RITA Award® winning author and Christy finalist Shelley Adina wrote her first novel when she was 13. It was rejected by the literary publisher to whom she sent it, but he did say she knew how to tell a story. That was enough to keep her going through the rest of her adolescence, a career, a move to another country, a B.A. in Literature, an M.F.A. in Writing Popular Fiction, and countless manuscript pages. Shelley is a world traveler who loves to imagine what might have been. Between books, Shelley loves playing the piano and Celtic harp, making period and steampunk costumes, and spoiling her flock of rescued chickens.

A fast paced, well written series where the characters actually have amazing character and the adventures never stop. I found every book to be entertaining and although it is called steampunk don't let that hold you back from trying book one. I promise you won't be disappointed. Jp

    This book is fun!

I'd call it a steampunk romantic adventure, with the emphasis on adventure. Night after night I'm staying up way too late to read it, even at the risk of annoying my husband with the glow of my Nook. The very beginning was a skosh slow for me as I adjusted to the steampunk frame of mind, but the characters are vividly drawn and as I came to care for them I was quickly pulled into their universe. I'm watching the page numbers march toward the end of the book with a great deal of dismay. I am NOT going to want this book to end.

    Throughly enjoyable read

I always enjoy a heroine with intelligence and spunk. The secondary characters are equally enjoyable.

    WORTH THE PRICE!

It's a different, yet more truthful, take on women's rights in the late Nineteenth Century, using Steampunk fiction as the literary vehicle. Reminds me of the absolute truthfulness of the first verse of Joan Baez' rendition of "The Wagoner's Lad":

Oh, hard is the fortune of all womankind
She's always controlled, she's always confined
Controlled by her parents until she's a wife
A slave to her husband the rest of her life
