Kathryn Kentyre has been said to be the illegitimate daughter of Mary, Queen of Scots. For 16 years, Queen Elizabeth has kept her tucked away in the Midlands. With Mary's execution imminent, Elizabeth hits on a daft plan: she coerces the imprisoned pirate Robert MacDarren into marrying Kathryn and taking her to Craighdhu, his home in--of all places--Scotland. Kathryn, who has endured a wretched life in the home of a sadistic vicar, philosophically toddles off with Robert. En route to Scotland, the reluctant bridegroom establishes a ``handfast'' marriage, which he can dissolve after one year (thus disposing of his politically dangerous spouse) provided Kathryn does not bear a child. Robert's insistence on sleeping with Kathryn is illogical in light of the terms of the marriage and his wish to separate after a year. As Johansen's ( The Tiger Prince ) plot makes its desultory way through increasing romantic and political entanglements toward an ending that is more incredible than surprising, Kathryn establishes herself at Craighdhu, courageously defending her new home and family from one who would use her as a pawn in a plan to seize power. (Sept.)

Passion and suspense abound in Johansen's most recent robust romance. Raised in bleak seclusion by a ruthlessly zealous vicar and his equally cruel wife, Kathryn Kentyre is abruptly rescued from her brutal existence by a dashingly handsome Scottish laird. Reluctantly compelled by Queen Elizabeth to wed and protect the lovely young waif rumored to be the illegitimate issue of Mary Queen of Scots and the earl of Shrewsbury, Black Robert MacDarren whisks his bride away to his impregnable fortress in the wild Scottish Highlands. Captivated by both Robert and his remote island home, Kate vows to tranform their marriage of convenience into an idyllic union. As Kate and Robert grow ever closer, their newfound happiness is threatened by the evil machinations of a calculating nobleman determined to exploit Kate as an expendable pawn in a deadly game of royal intrigue. Spellbinding romantic fiction from a master of the genre.

so this is my first book of hers to read and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't to die for either. i mean maybe if i hadn't just come out of a pretty good romance series then yeah maybe i might like it a wee bit more. to me it lacked everything. no adventure or true romance. the characters didn't really show to many acts of love or anything they just kinda jumped in the sack and had at it. and the ending was like ok what now, where did all that intrigue and adventure go. i mean one minute she's planning this awsome scheme and he's planning to rescue her and then everythings fine and dandy again. i thought it was a little under done in a sense it could have been pretty descent.

I don't recall how I acquired the book but it was a wonderful romance, I thought the characters a little different flavor than what I am used to. That is what makes it a keeper.

MY FIRST BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR AND NOT MY LAST. ON A SENSUAL SCALE OF 1-10 IT IS A 6.THIS IS A ROMANCE BOOK A TWIST AT THE END-HOWEVER UNPLAUSIBLE. WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT A 5 BUT THE TORTURE OF SO MANY CHARACTERS WAS A BIT MUCH.

When my brother first recommended I read this story, I was rather skeptical. I doubted that it was as good as he said it would be. So, dubiously, I started reading it. Once I started reading, I literally could not put it down. I stayed up all night reading by the light of my alarm clock. When I finished it at about 8:00 o¿ clock in the morning, I started reading it again. I¿ve read it so many times that my copy has fallen apart at the bindings. The action in this book is amazing. The romance is even better. I found myself falling in love with the rogue Scottish Robert, and I felt like I really got to know the suspicious English Kate. With some opposition from Scottish King James I, and political strife that follows the true course of history, this makes for a very well-rounded mix of historical fiction, action, and romance. This book promises a great deal and doesn¿t disappoint.

The way that Iris writes about the characters feelings and thoughts about each other are pretty magnificent. This book took me only a few days to read and I became so absorbed with the characters that I couldn't put the book down! I past this book around to all my freinds and they all enjoyed it. The ending will shock you...
