Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
Fans of the Septimus Heap fantasy series will thoroughly enjoy this collection of papers from his world. Included are papers from the Castle, the Wizard Tower, the Palace, and around the Castle. Histories and bios of characters enable the reader to better understand the past and how it impacts the current characters. A travel brochure depicting a boat tour around the castle allows one to travel around popular spots such as the Ramblings or Sally Mullins' Tea and Ale House. Arthur Mella's "Guide to Being Dead: Ten Handy Rules for New Ghosts" is most enlightening. Journals of Jenna, Marcia Overstrand, and Stanley, the Message Rat, are humorous, informative, and entertaining. Readers may explore the shops of Wizard Way or choose a restaurant from the "The Egg on Toast Restaurant Guide." This collection of diverse papers is a wonderful companion to the novels of the series. Readers will find themselves referring again and again to The Magykal Papers as they read the adventures of Septimus Heap. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up—Fans of Sage's saga will rejoice in the little pieces of "magyk" collected here. Beautifully rendered in full color, these papers, pamphlets, and journal entries add extra life to the world of Septimus Heap. The material is separated geographically, forming sections on "The Castle," "The Wizard's Tower," and so on, which makes reading from cover to cover difficult. Instead, readers will want to peruse the "papers" while waiting for the next installment in the series. Amazingly detailed drawings add life to each character and place that Zug depicts. This book, however, is just for true fans of the series. There are no new stories, just extra details designed to delight those already invested in Septimus's journey. A must-have where the books are popular, but an additional purchase for all others.—Lisa Marie Williams, East Gwillimbury Public Library, Holland Landing, Ontario
Kirkus Reviews
Heads up, Harry, there's a new young wizard on his way up. Ten years after a complicated bit of baby-switching, young Jenna learns that she's not a member of the tumultuous Heap household (six boys, just imagine), but a hidden Princess. The revelation comes as she's being swept to safety, her life forfeit to a crew of thoroughly knavish baddies headed by Necromancer DomDaniel. Along the way, she and her protector, ExtraOrdinary Wizard Marcia Overstrand pick up not only an assortment of fugitive Heaps, but an orphaned pipsqueak dubbed "Boy 412"-who gradually exhibits stunning powers of Magyk, as the local brand of spellcasting is dubbed. Tongue firmly in cheek, Sage creates a vividly realized world in which pens and rocks can display minds of their own, and a forest "still had a bad wolverine problem at night, and was infested with carnivorous trees." Ultimately, Jenna and Co. overcome all such obstacles, as well as their sly, dangerous, but bumbling adversaries, and Boy 412's (thoroughly telegraphed) true identity comes out. A quick-reading, stand-alone, deliciously spellbinding series opener. (Web site) (Fantasy. 10-13)

    A fun in between book...

If you love the Magyk series this is a great book to have to add to your collection. It was entertaining to read while waiting for the next book in the series to come out. It's full of beautiful illustrations and contained more information and background on the characters that you won't necessarily see in the regular series. It's true to Angie Sage's style with humor infused throughout.

Angie Sage brings stories to boys of grade school age - wonderful.

I have a son finishing fifth grade and he has read every one of Angie Sage's books. He enjoyed the fictional works that delved into fantasy, mistical, magical, tragedy, humor, honor and believing in ones self. We applaud Angie Sage for creating charachters that interest boys as well as girls. I believe that more boys would find this series interesting and thereby read more if they were available in school libraries and public libaries. I believe that elementary reading text books would be improved by including excerps from Magical Papers and Angie Sage's other works.
Bravo Angie Sage you won over my son and we are looking forward to more of your works.
