Of the many versions of this symphony I own (and of the many others I have heard) this one is by far the best. Bernstein's interpretations of Mahler are always passionate and powerful, but this rendering of the 5th is masterful. The speed of the first movement is slower than normal. It keeps your attention though in its nobility and poise. The second movement (which is my favorite) is powerful and stormy as called for by the composer. Yet, unlike other conductors, Bernstein does not fail to maintain a high degree of clarity and distinctiveness in the midst of the fury.
